EFFECTS OF THE MELANOCYTE STIMULATING HORMONE AND OF AN INDUCED SERUM FACTOR ON EYE PERMEABILITY AND SERUM LEVEL OF FREE FATTY ACIDS IN THE RABBIT

ABSTRACT A subcutaneous injection of melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) in the rabbit may give an aqueous flare response (permeability disturbance in the ciliary body) and serum from such a rabbit may induce a similar effect in another rabbit. Serum from this rabbit may in the next rabbit induce the same effect. The permeability effect obtained by serum injection is not accompanied by a free fatty acid (FFA) release, in contrast to the MSH effect. The FFA are not a prerequisite for a flare effect, though they may play a role in the production of the serum factor. The serum factor can hardly be a MSH compound.
