Smart Grid Implementation in Mozambique: Where to Start?

Abstract: The article presents a survey on the development of Smart Grids in the world. Its purpose is to present an overview of the possibilities and initial challenges to be overcome for its implementation in Mozambique. For the development of this article, a bibliographical survey of the world panorama of technology was made. As a result of this literary survey, it was understood that the concept of smart grids became more clear from 2005 and is developing. Some countries, mainly developed, have already joined the technology and they are with the pilot projects and realized. The motivations for its implementation vary from country to country. Increasing profits in the electricity sector, reducing energy technical losses, improving the environment and enhancing renewable energy are the main motivations. This technology brings benefits associated with technological innovation, new product development and new market opportunities. At the moment, it’s understood that, Mozambique is not in time to implement this technology effectively. Not only because many countries are still with pilot projects, but also, the financial costs for their implementationarehigh. However, although there are presumed difficulties for its implementation, it’s considered convenient to start with the discussions about smart grids in higher education and research institutions, fund mobilization and implementation of testing laboratories. Additionally, it is important to study the possibility of phased implementation of this technology in new condominiums or residential neighborhoods and to gain experience in countries that have already started to implement it.

This study emphasis on the physico-chemical properties of a new ber variety (Apple ber) originated in Thailand and slowly emerging in many parts of the world. The analysis is done under two different conditions the one being controlled and second one is blanched. The analysis revealed that the controlled condition is superior in physico-chemical properties than the blanched one. Also, proximate analysis was carried out on the fruit and its powdered form. In this analysis also controlled condition parameters were ahead of blanched. New products were developed with the Apple ber powder.

Melt blown (MB) technology requires precisely engineered and user-friendly equipment for successful new product development. Many significant efforts have been made to fully understand the technology and to improve the equipment by researchers and engineers around the world. The die assembly has always been the hot innovation spot in the history of melt blown technology developments. Among more than 210 U.S. patents related to melt blowing technology, approximately one-third of them are about hardware equipment and over 30 patents are on MB die assembly; the assembly consists of a polymer feed distribution system, a nose-piece and two adjustable air knives in many cases. Most of them are utility patents having the following three characteristics: novelty, utility and non-obviousness. In this paper, I will discuss selected patents in the MB history chronologically and focus on their novelty.

AbstractThe world is changing, and with it comes the requirement that enterprises change to survive in today's volatile markets. However, the change does not just include launching a new product on the market but also changing the business model of the whole organisation. To sustain in today's fast-changing markets, companies have to detect new market opportunities on time, assess them and find a way to incorporate the most beneficial opportunities into their business. Without this awareness that a company must change with the changing market, it risks losing its significance in the market. Both the change of the business model and the change of the organisation are needed to succeed in the market. An outstanding example of such a company is Netflix. They have successfully changed their business model twice: first, from an online-DVD-rental service to a streaming provider and then, to a content provider. They were aware of upcoming new technologies on-time, evaluated them and planned the implementation in the market while the old technology was still profitable. The present work outlines the major changes in Netflix's business model and how they managed the change process successfully.

AbstractThe electricity sector is in the midst of a structural change driven by new technologies. In Brazil, the electricity sector regulation has mechanisms to foster innovation, including investments in R&D. Recently, the regulatory agency and the industry have been calling for approaches to increase the rate at which R&D departments generate solutions that end up being adopted. As a result, novel approaches to R&D project management have entered the agenda. In this context, the objective of this paper is to characterise Agile Product Development and its application in a highly regulated sector. The paper presents a systematic literature review with the debates about Agile and new product development. Then, a case study exploring an early adoption of the Agile approach in R&D project management in the Brazilian electricity sector is presented. Results include the identification of the Agile features most frequently mentioned in the literature. Moreover, the case study explores the Agile features that were more easily absorbed in early adoption, such as iterative patterns, and discusses implementation challenges in team structure, feedback loops, and communication.

Our research examines the relationships among four factors thought to be important to new product developing organizations. Those factors include the speed with which product developers produce new products and bring them to market; the degree of integration among the various groups participating in the New Product Development (NPD) process; the proficiency with which the product developers perform their tasks; and the degree of success attained upon the completion of the NPD process. Market dynamism, or the degree of customer changeability, and market hostility, or the degree of market competitiveness, are thought to moderate the relationships among the four previously noted factors. The research questions driving our investigation include: (1) Does NPD project success vary with NPD process speed?; (2) Does NPD speed vary across innovation types (new-to-the-world products, line extensions, etc.)?; (3) Does the strength of the relationships among NPD speed, organizational integration, NPD proficiency (overall and Fuzzy Front End [FFE]), and success vary with the degree of environmental dynamism (changing customer needs)?; and (4) Does the strength of the relationships among NPD speed, organizational integration, NPD proficiency (overall and FFE), and success vary with the degree of market hostility (competition)? We probed the electrical equipment, medical device, and heavy construction equipment industries to provide the data to address our research questions. Our research suggests that the speed with which projects were completed in our sample did not vary between projects that were more or less successful. We also found that the speed with which projects were completed did not vary across various product categories (new-to-the-world, line extensions, etc.) of newly developed products for the industries studied. Primarily, we found that market dynamism moderates the relationship between NPD speed and NPD proficiency whereas environmental hostility mediates NPD speed and NPD proficiency, NPD speed and organizational integration, and NPD speed and new product market success. Our data indicate that speed is not associated with NPD proficiency, degree of organizational integration, and new product success in less dynamic markets whereas speed has an inverse relationship with successfully entering new markets, the proficiency with which development and launch activities are performed, and the proficiency with which new product marketing strategies were implemented in more dynamic markets. Finally, we found that speed is inversely related to successfully entering new markets, overall NPD proficiency and organizational integration, predevelopment stage proficiency and organizational integration, and development and launch proficiency and organizational integration in non-hostile (competitive) environments whereas we found no significant relationships between these factors and speed in hostile environments. We provide several implications for both scholars and NPD managers.

This article is based on the premises that the function of phantasy melts the subjectivity, revealing the perspective of intersubjectivity within it. On this purpose Sartre’s, Husserl’s and Merleau-Ponty’s researches on the function of imagination, which elucidate the image as the boundary slipping from the centre of Ego, are compared to the story of Hollywood’ movie „Fight Club“. The penguin, which appears in one of the episodes, registers the moment of egological schism, thus becoming the revelation and incarnation of phantasy. While the playful, autonomous and multiform character of imaginary is cleared out, we can ascertain, speaking in Kantian terms, that it has not a complementary or intermediary function, but, in the genesis of transcendental subject, plays the paradoxical role of „allien innerness“ or „inner alienity“.
