In this paper, the systematics for obtaining the Viola-Seaborg formula (VSF) for logarithmic partial alpha half-lives (Tα1/2) have been undertaken based on the NUBASE2016 evaluation. The constants Az and Bz in Geiger-Nuttal law for determination of Tα1/2  , are obtained using gs-gs transitions data, of even-even nuclei for two sets of nuclei with Z = 84 - 102 and Z = 86 - 98 with N > 126. The Viola-Seaborg co-efficients are determined for both the sets. The obtained parameters for both sets are tested on even-even nuclei for Z ranging from 104 - 118 and it is observed that first set parameters fare better. This formula for estimating α-decay half-lives of heavy nuclei can be extrapolated to predict those of super-heavy nuclei. The logarithmic half-lives Tα1/2 obtained for isotopes of Z = 121 and 122 using current modified VSF (AME2016) are compared with those obtained from theoretical considerations using Coulomb and proximity potential model (CPPM) and observed to be much larger. They are also much larger than those obtained from the previous coefficients based on AME2003 data.

We considered the systematics of Alpha-decay (AD) half-life (HL) of super-heavy nuclei (SHN) versus the decay energy and the total [Formula: see text]-kinetic energy. We have considered a potential model with Yukawa proximity potential and thereby calculated the HLs. Our results compared with experimental data and the empirical estimates. Also, we obtained [Formula: see text]-preformation factors from the ratio between theoretical and experimental results for a few super heavy nuclei. The results indicate the acceptability of the approach.

Theoretical α-decay half-lives of some nuclei from ground state to ground state are calculated using different nuclear potential model including Coulomb proximity potential (CPPM), Royer proximity potential and Broglia and Winther 1991. The calculated values comparing with experimental data, it is observed that the CPPM model is in good agreement with the experimental data.

We present a large scale survey of life-times for spontaneous fission in the regime of super-heavy elements (SHE), i.e. nuclei with Z =104-122. This is done on the basis of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock model. The axially symmetric fission path is computed using a quadrupole constraint. Self-consistent cranking is used for the collective masses and associated quantum corrections. The actual tunneling probability is estimated by the WKB approximation. Three typical Skyrme forces are used to explore the sensitivity of the results. Benchmarks in the regime Z =104-108 show an acceptable agreement. The general systematics reflects nicely the islands of shell stabilization and the crossover from α-decay to fission for the decay chains from the region of Z / N =118/176.

In this paper, the alpha decay process is investigated through the theoretical approaches for spherical Bismuth (Bi) isotopes in the range 187 [Formula: see text] A [Formula: see text] 214. The results are compared with the experimental data for isotopes of Bi with the modified Coulomb and proximity potential model (MCPPM). We analyze the systematics of alpha decay half-life (HL) of Bi isotopes versus the decay energy and the total [Formula: see text]-kinetic energy. The results and their systematics are compared with the available experimental data and with those data obtained from empirical models as the Viola-Seaborg (VS) formula, Royer (R) and the two versions of modified Brown (mB) empirical formulas. The computed half-lives (HLs) are compared with the experimental data and also with the existing empirical estimates and are found in good agreement.

The surface of neutron-rich heavy nuclei, with a neutron skin created by excess neutrons, provides an important terrestrial model system to study dilute neutron-rich matter. By using quasi-free α cluster–knockout reactions, we obtained direct experimental evidence for the formation of α clusters at the surface of neutron-rich tin isotopes. The observed monotonous decrease of the reaction cross sections with increasing mass number, in excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction, implies a tight interplay between α-cluster formation and the neutron skin. This result, in turn, calls for a revision of the correlation between the neutron-skin thickness and the density dependence of the symmetry energy, which is essential for understanding neutron stars. Our result also provides a natural explanation for the origin of α particles in α decay.
