Ophioscolex glacialis Müller and Troschel, 1840 (Ophiuroidea: Ophiomyxidae) was registered for first time off the Brazilian coast, from the Campos Basin of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The specimen was sampled during a environmental monitoring.

Recent studies reported the introduction of non-native species on the Brazilian coast. In this contribution, we provide the first record of Cephalopholis taeniops (Valenciennes 1828) in the western South Atlantic, based on a specimen captured off the Ilhas Cagarras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and discuss the potential agents for its introduction. While this single specimen was collected in 2006 in a well-known locality, no other specimen has been captured since.

During the program “Environmental Characterization of the Campos Basin, RJ, Brazil”, carried out from 2001 to 2003,117 stations were sampled on the continental slope of the Campos Basin off southeast Brazil, by the Research Vessel“Astro-Garoupa”. The samples were taken on soft bottoms at depths from 700 to 1950 m, with a 0.25 m2 box corer or bydredging with a Charcot dredge. Mollusks were present at all of the stations, and among the Gastropoda the Conoideashowed the highest diversity. Here we present the results obtained for the most abundant family, Raphitomidae. We found21 species in eight genera: Famelica, Eubela, Xanthodaphne, Magnella, Gymnobela, Pleurotomella, Aliceia andNeopleurotomoides. The last two genera are reported here for the first time in the South Atlantic Ocean. Among the 21species two had been previously reported for this region: Magnella malmii (Dall, 1889) and M. extensa (Dall, 1881).Three species had been reported for Brazil, but the new finds expand their known geographical distribution: Eubelalimacina (Dall, 1881), Famelica mirmidina (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1986) and Pleurotomella cala (Watson, 1885).Twelve species are reported for the first time in the South Atlantic: Aliceia aenigmatica Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1897,Xanthodaphne dalmasi (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1897), Xanthodaphne araneosa (Watson, 1881), Magnella watsoni(Dautzenberg, 1889), Gymnobela chyta (Watson, 1881), G. atypha (Bush, 1893), Gymnobela bairdii (Verrill & Smith,1884), Gymnobela blakeana Dall, 1881, Pleurotomella perpauxilla (Watson, 1881), P. bureaui (Dautzenberg & Fischer,1897), P. cf. anceyi (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1897) and P. coelorhaphe (Dautzenberg & Fischer, 1896). Four species arenew to science and are described here: Neopleurotomoides aembe, Xanthodaphne pichi, Gymnobela xaioca and Pleurotomella ybessa.

Despite the increasing number of reports on the deep-sea molluscs from the south-western Atlantic, we know very little about the protobranchs. The lack of information on the protobranch Pelecypoda off southern Brazil is reflected in the genusYoldiella. This contribution is part of an effort to increase the knowledge about this group off the Brazilian coast. Eight species ofYoldiellaare recognized here. ForYoldiella biguttata, previously reported from Brazil, the known distribution is extended southwards to the Campos Basin. ForYoldiella similisthis is the first record in the western Atlantic Ocean. ForYoldiella extensaandYoldiellaaff.jeffreysithis is the first record for Brazil. Four previously unknown species are described,Yoldiella lapernoisp. nov.,Yoldiella paranapuaensissp. nov.,Yoldiella arariboiasp. nov. andYoldiella curupirasp. nov. Considering only conchological features for the Atlantic species we could propose some clusters of species ofYoldiella.

The nudibranch Flabellina dana Millen and Hamann, 2006 is reported from two localities in the northeastern Brazilian coast. These are the first records of this species, previously recorded from localities in the Bahamas and the Caribbean Sea, in South Atlantic Ocean, extending its known geographic distribution more than 3500 km southward.

The present paper aims to investigate the relative sea-level and the coastal evolution during the Holocene in the Rio de Janeiro coastline, based on geological and biological indicators. Using topographic survey, excavation and coring, and 14C dating of these coastal deposits and beachrocks outcrops, we have reconstructed a sea-level curve for the Holocene. For the first time on the Brazilian coast it was identified a negative record of relative sea-level during Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene transition. After the transition, a relatively rapid increase of sea-level began. At approximately at 8500 cal yr BP, the sea-level was 0.5 m below the current level, was overtaken for the first time in the Holocene, at approximately 7500 cal yr BP. The maximum level of +2.5 m was reached between 4770 and 4490 cal yr BP. At the point of maximum transgression, the sea-level began a general behavior of lowering until the present. These results confirm other data already obtained elsewhere along the Atlantic coast of South America. The results of this study are consistent with previous researches and they help to refine the Holocene sea-level record along the Brazilian coast.

Abstract Although a group of soft ticks (Argasidae) associated with amphibians was recently discovered in Brazilian rainforests, parasitism by these ticks on cold-blooded animals remains less common than on mammal and bird species. In this study, we identified ticks that were collected from toads that had been caught in December 2016 and January 2017, at Itinguçú waterfall (22°54’05” S; 43°53’30” W) in the municipality of Itaguaí, state of Rio de Janeiro. Tick specimens were identified using a morphological and molecular approach. In total, twelve larvae of Ornithodoros ticks were collected from three individuals of Rhinella ornata and were identified as Ornithodoros faccinii. Our results include a longer 16S rRNA mitochondrial sequence for O. faccinii that supports its phylogenetic relatedness to Ornithodoros saraivai, and we report this tick species parasitizing Rhinella toads for the first time in Brazil.

The present note is the first record of the pike cichlid Crenicichla tendybaguassu for Uruguay, extending its distribution about 400 km to the South. The presence of C. tendybaguassu and their co-occurrence with other priority species for conservation in Uruguay adds greater value to conservation of the Cuareim River (Middle Uruguay River). Coloration of live breeding females is described for first time.

An analysis of bivalves shells collected off the coast of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and specimens of scientific collections, identified as Cuspidaria braziliensis E. A. Smith, 1915 was made. From the examination of syntypes of C. braziliensis and the type species of the genus Plectodon Carpenter, 1864, a redescription was made and it is proposed to transfer the species to the genus Plectodon, resulting in the new combination Plectodon braziliensis (E.A. Smith, 1915). This is the first record of a Plectodon species for the South Atlantic.
