ABSTRACTResults from high resolution helium temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy have been correlated to precision lattice constant and transport measurements and to theoretical band gap versus composition behavior. It is found that low temperature PL spectra provide precise determination (+/- 0.02%) of ZnTe mole fraction as well as carrier type, relative impurity concentration and point defect properties of these substrates. In addition helium and room temperature PL results are correlated to determine the accuracy of room temperature measurements for composition determination.

The study of the perovskite manganites La0.47Ca0.53Mn1-xCuxO3 with x = 0, 0.06, 0.09, and 0.13 has been done. The magnetic structure was determined using high-resolution neutron scattering at room temperature and low temperature. All samples were paramagnetic at room temperature and antiferromagnetic at low temperature. Using the SQUID Quantum Design, the samples showed that the doping of the insulating antiferromagnetic phase La0.47Ca0.53MnO3 with Cu doping resulted in the temperature transition from an insulator to metal state, and an antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase. The temperature transition from an insulator to metal state ranged from 23 to 100 K and from 200 to 230 K for the transition from an antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase.

The relationship among stress, cavities and twinning in the room-temperature bending process of hot-rolled AZ31 Mg alloy sheet was researched. It can be seen that the mount of twins which was tightly affected by stress value increases with the distance to press point. Otherwise, the cavities and twinning which seem totally independent, in fact affect with each other. Some cavities were hindered by twins and can not further grow up. Then, the relationship between slip and twinning was also roughly discussed. The dislocation lines in twins can be thought to release the stress focus and were beneficial for deformation.

A new type of 6H zigzag faults has been identified from high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurements performed on low-doped 4H-SiC homoepitaxial layer grown on off-axis substrates in a hot-wall CVD reactor. They are made of half unit cells of 6H with corresponding low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL) response ranging from about 3 eV to 2.5 eV at liquid helium temperature.

We found that a magnetic sensor made of a coil wound around a 5 f0.1 mm (Fe0.06Co0.94)72.5Si2.5B15 (FeCoSiB) amorphous wire could operate in a wide temperature range from room temperature to liquid helium temperature (4.2 K). The low-temperature sensing element of the sensor was connected to the room-temperature driving circuit by only one coaxial cable with a diameter of 1 mm. The one-cable design of the magnetic sensor reduced the heat transferring through the cable to the liquid helium. To develop a magnetic sensing system capable of operating at liquid helium temperature, we evaluated the low-temperature properties of the FeCoSiB magnetic sensor.
