ABSTRACTNonlinear optical dendritic macromolecules, called “azobenzene dendrons”, having a branching structure modified with a second-order nonlinear optical chromophore has been synthesized. An electron donor and acceptor azobenzene chromophore having a large molecular hyperpolarizability of β0=150E-30 esu, was chosen. The electronic structure of synthesized dendrons, which were expected to become dipolar due to their intermolecular attractive interaction, was proven by second-order nonlienar optical properties. The molecular hyperpolarizabilities of azobenzene dendrons were measured by the hypr-Rayleigh scattering technique. The highest molecular hyperpoalrizability was found to be 3,010E-30 esu for an azobenzene dendron having 15 chromophoric unit, where each chromophore coherently contribute to the second harmonic generation. This level of the molecular hyperpolarizability was much larger than that for a monomeric azobenzene chromophore.

We have synthesized derivatives of pyropheophorbide-a with electron donor and acceptor groups which localize in lipid membranes and can be used for multi-photon imaging via second harmonic generation and two-photon excited fluorescence.

This short review outlines the main results obtained in the field of molecular materials based on zinc coordination compounds for second-order nonlinear optics. It presents an overview of the main classes of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) active complexes bearing monodentate, bidentate, tridentate, or tetradentate π-delocalized ligands such as substituted stilbazoles, bipyridines, phenanthrolines, terpyridines, and Schiff bases. Macrocyclic ligands such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines are not covered. This paper shows how coordination to the Zn(II) center of π-delocalized nitrogen donor ligands produces a significant enhancement of their quadratic hyperpolarizability. Dipolar complexes are mainly presented, but octupolar zinc complexes are also presented. The coverage is mainly focused on NLO properties that are measured at the molecular level, working in solution, by means of the electric field-induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) or the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) techniques.

The second-order nonlinear optical properties of polystyrene particles coated with two well-characterized nonlinear optical chromophores with different molecular symmetry have been studied. From the markedly different depolarization ratio for the hyper-Rayleigh scattering from the molecular scatterers and from the largely different second-harmonic intensity from particles coated with these chromophores, we conjecture that contributions from antisymmetric molecular electronic states are necessary to observe second-order nonlinear effects from centrosymmetrical particles in isotropic solution.

ABSTRACTA novel rigid and planar chromophore, p-phenylene benzobisthiazole unit with donor and acceptor groups, has been synthesized for second-order nonlinear optical applications. The first hyperpolarizability, β, of the nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophore has been measured by a Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering technique at 1064 nm in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol solution. The β value of the NLO chromophore is 405E-30 esu, which is about seventeen times that of the p-NA (nitroaniline) value. The chromophore showed good thermal stability up to 330 °C in nitrogen atmosphere.

AbstractThe design and synthesis of a family of calix[4]arene-based nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores are discussed. The calixarene chromophores are macrocyclic compounds consisting of four simple D-π-A units bridged by methylene groups. These molecules were synthesized such that four D-π-A units of the calix[4]arene were aligned along the same direction with the calixarene in a cone conformation. These nonlinear optical super-chromophores were subsequently fabricated into covalently bound self-assembled monolayers on the surfaces of fused silica and silicon. Spectroscopic second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements were carried out to determine the absolute value of the dominant element of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility, d33, and the average molecular alignment, ψ. We find a value of d33 = 60 pm/V at a fundamental wavelength of 890 nm, and ψ˜ 36° with respect to the surface normal.

New acidochromic and photochromic compounds with nonlinear optical properties have been designed and synthesized. The hyperpolarizabilities of the zwitterionic colored forms have been quantified with polarized hyper-Rayleigh scattering experiments. The static value of oxazolidino-indoline 2 is found to be as high as Disperse Red One. This opens the way to novel multi-addressable NLO-systems.
