In this note we deal with the approximate solution of the buckling problem of a clamped-free double-walled carbon nanotube. First the finite difference method is utilized to solve this case. Then this approach is verified by solving the buckling problem of a double-walled carbon nanotube that is simply supported at both ends for which the exact solution is available.

In this study, we investigate the vibrations of the cantilever single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) with attached bacterium on the tip in view of developing the sensor. This sensor will be able to help to identify the bacterium or virus that may be attached to the SWCNT. Two cases are considered: These are light or heavy bacteria attached to the nanotube. The problem is solved by the exact solution, the finite difference method, and the Bubnov–Galerkin method.

In the present work, by considering the agglomeration effect of single-walled carbon nanotubes, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded nanocomposite sandwich sectorial plates are presented. The volume fractions of randomly oriented agglomerated single-walled carbon nanotubes are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. To determine the effect of carbon nanotube agglomeration on the elastic properties of carbon nanotube-reinforced composites, a two-parameter micromechanical model of agglomeration is employed. In this research work, an equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby–Mori–Tanaka approach is considered to estimate the effective constitutive law of the elastic isotropic medium (matrix) with oriented straight carbon nanotubes. The two-dimensional generalized differential quadrature method as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the equations of motion and to implement the various boundary conditions. The proposed sectorial plates are simply supported at radial edges, while all possible combinations of free, simply supported, and clamped boundary conditions are applied to the other two circular edges. The benefit of using the considered power-law distribution is to illustrate and present useful results arising from symmetric and asymmetric profiles. The effects of agglomeration, geometrical, and material parameters together with the boundary conditions on the frequency parameters of the sandwich functionally graded nanocomposite plates are investigated. It is shown that the natural frequencies of structure are seriously affected by the influence of carbon nanotubes agglomeration. This study serves as a benchmark for assessing the validity of numerical methods or two-dimensional theories used to analyze the sandwich sectorial plates.

The nonlinear differential eigenvalue problem describing eigenvibrations of a simply supported beam with elastically attached load is investigated. The existence of an increasing sequence of positive simple eigenvalues with limit point at infinity is established. To the sequence of eigenvalues, there corresponds a system of normalized eigenfunctions. To illustrate the obtained theoretical results, the initial problem is approximated by the finite difference method on a uniform grid. The accuracy of approximate solutions is studied. Investigations of the present paper can be generalized for the cases of more complicated and important problems on eigenvibrations of plates and shells with elastically attached loads.

This study deals with the Bubnov-Galerkin method applied to the buckling of clamped-free double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) subjected to a concentrated compressive load at the free end. It was found that at least four comparison functions are needed in order to obtain accurate results.

The vibration behavior of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) is investigated based on Donnell shell theory with van der Waals interaction taken into consideration. In addition, new results are obtained for the natural frequencies of a DWCNT based on a simplified version of Donnell shell theory by neglecting the tangential inertia terms. The resulting reduced characteristic equation for the natural frequency represents the radial mode of vibration. The factor of neglecting tangential inertia relative to the values of frequencies obtained by full Donnell shell theory is also obtained with attendant interesting results. Further possible simplifications of Donnell shell theory are introduced. For the first time in the literature, the effect of neglect of tangential inertia terms in DWCNTs is investigated. Accurate approximate analytical formulas are uncovered for the fundamental natural frequencies and compared with the exact values.

In this paper, a method to calculate tsunami wave front is introduced using the finite difference method to solve the ill-posed problem and to calculate perturbed velocity of the wave front. Comparison between the actual and approximate solution will be proposed in a table form and a graphic form.

In this article, the inverse source problem is determined by the partition hyperbolic equation under the left end flux tension of the string, where the extra measurement is considered. The approximate solution is obtained in the form of splitting and applying the finite difference method (FDM). Moreover, this problem is ill-posed, dealing with instability of force after adding noise to the additional condition. To stabilize the solution, the regularization matrix is considered. Consequently, it is proved by error estimates between the regularized solution and the exact solution. The numerical results show that the method is efficient and stable.
