The main aim of this study was to compare refraction measurements with and without cycloplegia from two refractors devices, (TRK-2P autorefractometer (TRK-2P) and wavefront-based refraction Visionix 130 (VX130)) in children and adolescents. This descriptive observational study included 20 myopic eyes and 40 hyperopic eyes measured in two different Spanish hospitals. Cycloplegia was carried out by three drops of cyclopentolate hydrochloride 1% (Colircusí cycloplegic, Alcon Healthcare S.A., Barcelona). The mean age of the myopia group was 12.40 ± 3.48 years; for the hyperopia group, the mean age was 7.37 ± 2.47 years. In the myopia group, autorefraction and wavefront-based refraction did not show clinically significant differences in any components between with and without cycloplegia. The hyperopia group showed statistical and clinically significant differences in sphere and SE components between relaxed and non-relaxed states of accommodation, although the cylindrical components were not clinically different. In this study, we considered a value of ≥0.50D as a clinically significant difference in refraction. Therefore, both devices were capable of obtaining accurate refractions without cyclopegia in myopia children, although they did not avoid instrument myopia and accommodation involved in hyperopia children. Moreover, both refractometers could be useful for astigmatism monitoring in children without the need for cycloplegic drops.

In this paper, we demonstrate the use of the modified phase retrieval as a method for application in the measurement of small-slope free-form optical surfaces. This technique is a solution for the measurement of small-slope free-form optical surfaces, based on the modified phase retrieval algorithm, whose essence is that only two defocused images are needed to estimate the wave front with an accuracy similar to that of the traditional phase retrieval but with less image capturing and computation time. An experimental arrangement used to measure the small-slope free-form optical surfaces using the modified phase retrieval is described. The results of these experiments demonstrate that the modified phase retrieval method can achieve measurements comparable to those of the standard interferometer.

The initial phase of a spark discharge in the gap between the pin (cathode) and a plane 1.5 mm long in atmospheric pressure air under conditions of preliminary photoionization by an auxiliary discharge was investigated by the method of shadow photography. In the absence of preionization, the discharge from the first nanoseconds after breakdown is an aggregate of a large number of micron-diameter channels. It was found that the electron concentration resulting from preionization, estimated at 108  109 cm-3, increases the degree of uniformity of the discharge channel in the near-cathode region; however, in the near-anode region, the channel remains microstructured. Within the framework of the mechanism of microstructure formation due to the instability of the ionization wave front, a criterion for the formation of a uniform discharge is obtained and an explanation of the results obtained is presented.

We demonstrate an adaptive wave-front shaping of optical beams transmitted through fiber bundles as a powerful resource for multisite, high-resolution bioimaging. With the phases of all the beamlets delivered through up to 6000 different fibers within the fiber bundle controlled individually, by means of a high-definition spatial light modulator, the overall beam transmitted through the fiber bundle can be focused into a beam waist with a diameter less than 1 μm within a targeted area in a biotissue, providing a diffraction-limited spatial resolution adequate for single-cell or even subcellular bioimaging. The field intensity in the adaptively-focused continuous-wave laser beam in our fiber-bundle-imaging setting is more than two orders of magnitude higher than the intensity of the speckle background. Once robust beam focusing was achieved with a suitable phase profile across the input face of the fiber bundle, the beam focus can be scanned over a targeted area with no need for a further adaptive search, by applying a physically intuitive, wave-front-tilting phase mask on the field of input beamlets. This method of beam-focus scanning promises imaging speeds compatible with the requirements of in vivo calcium imaging.

An optical design for telescope with spherical primary mirror, planoidal surface and two-lens corrector is discussed. The spherical mirror hasn aperture ratio 1/2.69. After reflection from the spherical mirror, the wave front falls on a planoidal surface and “forms” the reflected wave front from a virtual mirror with e 2 = 1.576. After passing the two-lens corrector, the light is collected in the focal plane. A dot diagram in the focal plane shows that all three-order aberrations are successfully corrected. The effective field of view is 2 degrees. The aperture ratio is 1/2.28.

Rivers like the Danube crossing many countries gather floating debris. These countless times block locks, access roads to ports, access walkways on the berths of passenger ships and more. The paper presents the studies carried out in order to design a ship for the collection of these floating debris. Several variants have been chosen, of which one will be presented that is optimal from the point of view of the propulsion installation and especially of the wave front that it produces during the operation of waste collection and navigation to the place of unloading. In order to optimize the shapes of the ship, the NUMECA calculation program was used. It provides important data on the wavefront produced by the ship.

Conical cumulation in storage ampoules consists of a periodically repeating wave pattern - the formation of an axial high-pressure region as a result of the focusing of oblique waves and its unloading. In this case, the convergence of the oblique wave is accompanied by a loss of stability - protrusions appear at the wave front, the collision of which leads to an increase in pressure. The expansion of the high-pressure region is accompanied by the formation of an axial crack and continues until its pressure becomes lower than the pressure of the incoming oblique waves, after which the flow pattern is repeated.

Abstract Supratransmission waves are stable objects that can exist in different discrete environments. In this paper, we consider the interaction of such waves with single edge dislocations of various configurations in a crystal with A3B stoichiometry. The model was a Pt3Al crystal, the potential obtained by the embedded atom method was used to describe the interaction of its atoms. Quantitative characteristics of the wave were obtained before and after the interaction. It is found that the degree of energy dissipation by dislocations depends on the mutual orientation of the wave front and the extra plane of the dislocation. Numerical estimates are made for four different configurations. The results obtained can be useful in studying the propagation of soliton-type waves in defect crystals of various compositions.
