The objective of this chapter is to gain a better understanding of the usefulness of massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) for promoting English as a foreign language (EFL) acquisition. To accomplish this goal, the author analyzed specific categories of interaction occurring between English language learners while playing an online game entitled Eve Online. Previous research has proved that there are positive outcomes on EFL acquisition from the interaction that takes place while playing video games known as MMORPGs. These games immerse players in virtual worlds that are inhabited by hundreds and even thousands of other players, and all are partaking in the game in real time. Learners who choose to play the game in a foreign language are exposed to target language input in a context-rich environment where they can interact with native-speakers and other language learners.

This article makes the case for expanding drama pedagogy in foreign language education to include strategies from postdramatic theater, which abandons traditional notions of plot, character, and dialogue and prioritizes theatrical performances over dramatic texts. The article presents findings from an action research project conducted with undergraduate students of German at the College of Charleston, South Carolina in the spring semester of 2013. It describes and discusses the efficacy of specific postdramatic theater strategies and assignments that encouraged Bachelor’s students of German to think beyond dramatic convention by detaching body from character, separating voice and movement from text, and exploring a heterogeneity of theatrical codes via hands-on writing and directing exercises. Based on extensive documentation of the course and the learners’ experiences, the article concludes by discussing postdramatic theater’s capacity to promote foreign language learning, critical thinking, and unfamiliar modes of perception and signification.

Education faces the challenges of modern society, which is in high demand for effective tools for teaching foreign languages at a non-linguistic university. Today the main approach applied is a combination of traditional and intensive methods relying on a functional-communicative linguodidactic model. In the context of learning a foreign language, students not always have an opportunity for speech practice. The peculiarity of the discipline is that communication is the goal and means of learning. Thus, it is required to frame out the imaginary activities as an operational background of the communication (as means), and to show the necessity of speech acts, without which it is impossible to reach the goals of such activity. It is shown that the most productive way to arrange group communication in class is the educational plot-based role-playing game. Being a methodical technique belonging to the group of active methods of teaching practical knowledge and skills, yet, it is one of the forms of the speech situation organization, used for training purposes. However, the article describes an attempt to prove the advantages of a polylogical form of communication over the dialogic one. It was discovered that the number of game roles influenced the nature of the participants’ verbal interaction and the level of their overall involvement. Besides, regular role-playing in class allowed to raise the general learning level of most students gradually. The obtained results, conclusions, and recommendations allow more extensive use of role-playing for a foreign language learning and upbringing of students.
