Having cultural awareness deals much more with ones’ ability to face global interaction and to communicate appropriately, and thus, is crutial for students taking micro-teaching class of ETED UIN Surabaya as English teacher candidates. To gain meaningful English teaching, ETED students need to highlight that language learning without involving any cultural contents means nothing. This paper is a literature review of the bigger study which aims to examine the level of Students’ cultural awareness in micro teaching class of English Teacher Education Department and the strategies that are used by students of micro teaching class to incorporate cultural aspect into their English language teaching.

This chapter examines how pre-service teachers specializing in English Language Teaching (ELT) in secondary schools can learn to teach for Next-Generation Education by developing professional skills that are in line with today and tomorrow's technology-mediated environments. To face this challenge, some specific CALL-based ELT training combining action and reflection has recently been introduced in the Education Department at Paris-Sorbonne University. In order to examine the specific CALL-based ELT training offered in light of the set objective, its theoretical underpinnings will first be considered. The design and content of a CALL-based ELT course and of an online tutoring module will then be studied. The pre-service teachers' perception of this CALL-based ELT training will then be explored through the results of online surveys. Conclusions will be drawn from these results and future directions will be outlined.

Abstract The focus of this paper is on the cultural aspects of the internationally, well-recognised and accepted international teacher training course known as Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), or rather, the lack of it. In what follows, we will first discuss the various aspects related to the importance of culture and its inclusion in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). Next, we will discuss the main highlights of the CELTA course and its main components and present a practical suggestion for implementing a short ‘culture’ component that can be easily integrated into the course where it will increase cultural awareness amongst new teachers embarking on a career abroad in a foreign country and hopefully achieve pedagogical competence when working abroad.

English as a lingua franca (ELF) has become a standardized mode of communication between diverse sociocultural groups. Besides linguistic competence, English language learners should possess adequate intercultural competence to establish successful social relations worldwide. Therefore, one of the main objectives of English language teaching (ELT) has become the development of intercultural speakers (Byram 1997; Kramsch 1998). One way of achieving this is by using literature in the classroom because learners interpret literary texts from their personal experience and are thus engaged both at a cognitive and an emotional level. Their individual interpretations can nevertheless also lead to generalizations and enforcement of stereotypes about foreign cultures. Hanauer (2001) has developed a method called focus-on-cultural understanding to expose learners to different interpretations. The study explores whether his method can be successfully applied in the context of Croatian university education. The method has proven to be effective for raising learners’ cultural awareness, which could lead to further development of their intercultural competence.

The present study describes the development of a course module on Entrepreneurship-Based Translation and Interpretation Skills for the students of English Language Teacher Education Department. The module was inspired by empirical research findings about the knowledge base of student teachers. It was created and refined during its three-year application will be reflected upon here, including feedback collected from student evaluation sheets. In the end, the participants responded positively to the course module. The students stated that the module was interesting, relevant and valuable for their later profession. They also emphasized that they now felt more competent in the area of Translation and Interpretation Skills and entrepreneurship.

This study sought to determine the sequence of L2 morpheme presentation, as well as to determine whether or not the sequence of morpheme presentations correspond with the recognized natural order of morpheme acquisition in English Language Teaching course books utilized with young adult learners at a public sector vocational education institution in Thailand. Qualitative analysis was employed in the scrutinizing of twelve beginner and elementary level ESL and EFL learners course books that have been utilized as the primary teaching material for over a decade by the general education department of the institute. This examination revealed that the morpheme presentation sequence within the selected ELT course books was not analogous with the conclusions in the supporting literature. The findings further indicated that the widely accepted viewpoint of natural order morpheme acquisition was likewise not substantially reflected within the analyzed texts. Albeit, earlier studies have found that an unnatural sequence of morpheme presentation in EFL course books may hamper communicative competence in English, further study is required to establish if this may be a contributing factor for the overall low English proficiency of adult L2 learners in Thailand.

Digital epistemologies in the area of literacies and language teaching are becoming increasingly important, due to the radical transformations that our society is undergoing as a result of the advent of the new technologies of communication and of processes linked to globalization. It is a quite relevant and pressing issue, since children and the youth are coming to school in possession of a great deal of knowledge about and competence with digital tools and discourses. On the other hand, there are still a great number of students that lack digital literacy and face difficulties in reading from the screen. Taking into account the fact that the research on digital games and language teaching in Brazil is very incipient, the aim of this project is to examine ways that literacies and digital games can be combined to improve English language teaching in Sergipe and Brazil. Connecting all these topics may bring innovative results with potential to be applied to English language teaching and teacher education and solidify the research in this area.
