Advances in our understanding of pathophysiology and tissue healing and developments in trauma care and biomaterials have undoubtedly improved outcomes in high energy and other complex fractures. However, controversy still exists. In this article some of these developments will be discussed, based on a literature review of current topics and key papers which have shaped the management of the facial trauma over the last 10–20 years.
