This quantitative, survey type study aimed to analyze the patient safety culture of the nursing and medical teams of public hospitals of Florianopolis. A total of 141 professionals participated, with data collected between February/April 2013, after approval by the Ethics Committee. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture was used and the 12 dimensions of the culture were evaluated. Descriptive analysis was performed, classifying the dimensions into areas of strength or critical areas. Despite not verifying a specific area of strength, the dimensions with the best evaluation were Supervisor/manager expectations and actions promoting safety and Organizational learning - continuous improvement. The dimensions with the highest percentage of negative responses, identified as critical were: Non-punitive response to errors and Management support for safety. The safety culture in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units presented aspects that could potentially become areas of strength. Cultural changes are necessary, especially in addressing errors.

OBJECTIVE: to verify the assessment of the patient safety culture according to the function and length of experience of the nursing and medical teams at Neonatal Intensive Care Units.METHOD: quantitative survey undertaken at four Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Florianópolis, Brazil. The sample totaled 141 subjects. The data were collected between February and April 2013 through the application of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture. For analysis, the Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-Square tests and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient were used. Approval for the research project was obtained from the Ethics Committee, CAAE: 05274612.7.0000.0121.RESULTS: differences in the number of positive answers to the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, the safety grade and the number of reported events were found according to the professional characteristics. A significant association was found between a shorter Length of work at the hospital and Length of work at the unit and a larger number of positive answers; longer length of experience in the profession represented higher grades and less reported events. The physicians and nursing technicians assessed the patient safety culture more positively. Cronbach's alpha demonstrated the reliability of the instrument.CONCLUSION: the differences found reveal a possible relation between the assessment of the safety culture and the subjects' professional characteristics at the Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

PurposeThe purpose is to assess the patient safety culture perceived by healthcare and administrative staff in a Brazilian hospital and examine whether education and experience are related to positive perceptions.Design/methodology/approachA descriptive–analytical case study was carried out at Ernesto Dornelles Hospital, a private Brazilian institution. The Brazilian version of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture was used to assess the perceptions of 618 participants, of whom 315 worked in healthcare assistance and 303 in administrative services. The main outcome was the percentage of positive responses, and the independent variables included the type of work, schooling and length of experience.FindingsNone of the twelve dimensions was strengthened. The percentage of positive responses was the highest for “Hospital management support for patient safety” (67.5%), and the lowest was for “Nonpunitive response to error” (29%). The healthcare staff had a slightly higher average than the administrative staff. The percentage of positive responses from professionals with undergraduate or graduate degrees was higher for the eight dimensions of safety culture. The length of hospital experience was not associated with any dimensions.Originality/valueThis study explored the influence of education and professional experience on the perception of patient safety in healthcare and administrative staff from a private institution. These approaches allow to know with greater depth and clarity factors that are related to the patient safety culture and, thus, have more consistent evidence to support interventions in specific needs.

Abstract Background The intensive care units are a high-risk environments for the occurrence of adverse events with serious consequences. The development of patient safety culture is a strategic focus to prevent these adverse events and improve patient safety and healthcare quality. This study aimed to assess patient safety culture in Tunisian intensive care units and to determine its associated factors. Methods It is a multicenter, descriptive cross-sectional study, among healthcare professionals of the intensive care units in the Tunisian center. The data collection was spread over a period of 2 months (October-November 2017). The measuring instrument used is the validated French version of the Hospital Survey On Patient Safety Culture questionnaire. Data entry and analysis was carried out by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 20.0) and Epi Info 6.04. Chi-square test was used to explore factors associated with patient safety culture. Results A total of 404 professionals participated in the study with a participation rate of 81.94%, spread over 10 hospitals and 18 units. All dimensions were to be improved. The overall perception of safety was 32.35%. The most developed dimension was teamwork within units with a score of 47.87% and the least developed dimension was the non-punitive response to error (18.6%). The patient safety culture was significantly more developed in private hospitals in seven of the 10 dimensions. Participants working in small units had a significantly higher patient safety culture. It has been shown that when workload is reduced the patient safety culture was significantly increased. Conclusions This study has shown that the patient safety culture still needs to be improved and allowed a clearer view of the safety aspects requiring special attention. Thus, improving patient safety culture. by implementing the quality management and error reporting systems could contribute to enhance the quality of healthcare provided to patients. Key messages The culture of culpability is the main weakness in the study. Encouraging event reporting and learning from errors s should be priorities in hospitals to enhance patient safety and healthcare quality.

Introduction: Quality and safety is an important challenge in healthcare systems all over the world particularly in developing parts. Objective: This survey aimed to assess patient safety culture (PSC) in emergency departments (EDs) in Yemen and identify its associated factors. Methods: A questionnaire containing the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) was distributed to ED physicians, nurses, and clinical, and non-clinical staff at three public teaching general hospitals. The percentages of positive responses on the 12 patient safety dimensions and the summation of PSC and two outcomes (overall patient safety grade and adverse events reported in the past year) were assessed. Factors associated with PSC aggregate score were analyzed. Results: finally, out of 400 questionnaires, 250 (64%) were analyzed. In total, 207 (82.3%) participants were nurses and physicians; 140 (56.0%) were male; 134 (53.6%) were less than 30 years old; and 134 (53.6%) had a university degree. Participants provided the highest ratings for the “teamwork within units” PSC composite (67%). The lowest rating was for “non-punitive response to error” (21.3%). A total of 120 (48.1%) participants did not report any events in the past year and 99 (39.7%) gave their hospital an “excellent/very good” overall patient safety grade. There were significant differences between the hospitals’ EDs in the rating of “handoffs and transitions” (p=0.016), “teamwork within units” (p=0.018), and “frequency of adverse events reported” (p=0.016). Staff working in intensive care units (8.4%, n=21) had lower patient safety aggregate scores. Conclusions: PSC ratings appear to be low in Yemen. This study emphasizes the need to create and maintain a PSC in EDs through the implementation of quality improvement strategies and environment of transparency, open communications, and continuous learning.

Background: In the healthcare sector, a comprehensive safety culture includes both patient care-related and occupational aspects. In recent years, healthcare studies have demonstrated diverse relationships between aspects of psychosocial working conditions, occupational, and patient safety culture. The aim of this study was to consider and test relevant predictors for staff’s perceptions of occupational and patient safety cultures in hospitals and whether there are shared predictors. From two German university hospitals, 381 physicians and 567 nurses completed a questionnaire on psychosocial working conditions, occupational, and patient safety culture. Two regression models with predictors for occupational and patient safety culture were conceptually developed and empirically tested. In the Occupational Safety Culture model, job satisfaction (β = 0.26, p ≤ 0.001), work‒privacy conflict (β = −0.19, p ≤ 0.001), and patient-related burnout (β = −0.20, p ≤ 0.001) were identified as central predictors. Important predictors in the Patient Safety Culture model were management support for patient safety (β = 0.24, p ≤ 0.001), supervisor support for patient safety (β = 0.18, p ≤ 0.001), and staffing (β = 0.21, p ≤ 0.001). The two models mainly resulted in different predictors. However, job satisfaction and leadership seem to play an important role in both models and can be used in the development of a comprehensive management of occupational and patient safety culture.
