Abstract This study characterizes the gill net fishery at Colônia de Pescadores Z13 (CPZ13), in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, and its relationship with the marine protected area ‘Monumento Natural do Arquipélago das Ilhas Cagarras – MoNa Cagarras’, describing the fleet and fishing gears, identifying fishing spots, species and their associations by gillnet type. From June 2012 to May 2013, every Tuesday to Sunday, gill net landings were monitored and fishers interviewed regarding their catch. Small boats (dory whaleboats) are used to set three types of gillnets: “Corvineira” (target species – whitemouth croaker), “linguadeira” (target species – flounders) and “rede-alta” (target species – bluefish). Fifty-nine species within 37 families were captured at 14 fishing spots, showing association with bottom type and distance from shore. The use of fisher’s local ecological knowledge defines gear placement at specific sites targeting fisheries resources. All fishing sites are not within the limits of MoNa Cagarras but would benefit from management plans including an MPA buffering zone.

Whale sharks are a major attraction for tourist divers and snorkelers in South Ari Atoll, Maldives. Yet without information regarding the use and economic extent of the attraction, it is difficult to prioritize conservation or implement effective management plans. Using empirical recreational data and generalized mixed models, this study provides the first economic valuation—via direct spend—of whale shark tourism in Maldives. We estimate that direct expenditure on whale shark excursions in the South Ari Marine Protected Area for 2012–2013 at US$7.6 and $9.4 million, respectively. These expenditures are based on an estimate of 72 to 78 thousand tourists who are involved in whale shark excursions annually. This level of visitation and expenditure highlights the need to implement regulations and management which can safeguard the sustainability of the industry through ensuring guest satisfaction and whale shark conservation.

<p><em>T</em><em>raditional use zones (TUZ) of Misool </em><em>is located </em><em>within the marine protected area</em><em> of Misool which has high marine biodiversity, especially coral and reef fish. </em><em>Regulating the use of fishing gears in</em><em> TUZ of Misool</em><em>,it is essential to ensure the sustainability of </em><em>marine</em><em> ecosystems and fisheries in the region. The  objective of this study isto determine the suitability of fishing gear inthe depth zone of less than 50 m and more than 50 m in Misool TUZ, Raja Ampat. </em><em>The fishing gear suitability was assessed based on bioecological, social, and legal aspects. </em><em>The method used in this research was analytic hierarchy process (AHP) whichderivesthe priorities</em><em>for </em><em>criteria and alternative fishing gear using expert judgment. The results of the analysis showed that fishing gear</em><em>s</em><em> that wasmost appropriate </em><em>to be </em><em>operated in the zone which has thewater depth of less than 50 m was handline.  T</em><em>he most </em><em>decisive criteria for thiswasthat the fishing gear was undestructive to coral reef ecosystem and seagrass ecosystem. In addition,</em><em>fishing gears that were suitable in</em><em>the zone with depth </em><em>more</em><em> than 50 m were trolline and handline</em><em>, </em><em>and </em><em>the most </em><em>decisive criteria wasthe availability of fish target and not causing conflict between fishermen. Oleh karena itu,pengaturan penggunaan alat tangkap ikan di ZPT Misool sangat penting untuk menjamin keberlanjutan ekosistem laut dan perikanan di wilayah ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kesesuaian alat tangkap untuk dioperasikan di zona perairan pada kedalaman kurang dari 50 m dan lebih dari 50 m di ZPT Misool, Raja Ampat. Kesesuaian alat penangkapan ikan dinilai berdasarkan aspek bioekologi, sosial dan legal. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode <em>Analytical Hierarchy Process</em> (AHP) dengan pembobotan terhadap kriteria dan alternatif alat tangkap menggunakan penilaian pakar. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa alat tangkap yang paling sesuai digunakan di zona perairan pada kedalaman kurang dari 50 m adalah pancing ulur, dengan kriteria yang paling menentukan adalah tidak merusak ekosistem terumbu karang dan ekosistem padang lamun. Kemudian pada zona perairan pada kedalaman lebih dari 50 m, alat tangkap yang sesuai digunakan adalah pancing tonda dan pancing ulur, dengan kriteria yang paling menentukan adalah ketersediaan target ikan dan tidak menimbulkan konflik antara nelayan. Manado Bay waters have long been known as a center of artisanal fisheries activities because of the availability of abundant fisheries resources. However,  continuous increase in technoligcal  development and fish resources demand make natural resources exploitation tend to destruct the  aquatic habitat and fish resources itself. Therefore, this study was aimed to inventory the types of fishing gears operated in Manado Bay; evaluate the possible impact on fish resources and environment; and analyze the status of fishing fisheries sustainability. This study was based on survey methods, through direct observation of fishing process and observations on the catch composition. Fisheries sustainability status was analyzed using Rapfish program. Common fishing gears used by fishermen in Manado Bay were multi hooks vertical hand line (noru), bottom hand line, trolling line, bottom long line, surface gill net, bottom gill net and traps. Fishing gears that do not have an impact on fish resources and environment is noru fishing, trolling and surface gill net, while bottom long line, bottom gill net and trap could potentially have negative impact on fish resources and physical seabed habitat. ordination sustainability status analysis of fishing fisheries in Manado Bay for each dimension is still considered as sustainable enough. Perairan Teluk Manado telah lama dikenal sebagai pusat aktivitas perikanan rakyat karena ketersediaan sumber daya ikan masih melimpah. Tetapi perkembangan teknologi dan permintaan sumber daya ikan yang terus meningkat menyebabkan pengeksploitasian sumber daya alam cenderung merusak habitat perairan dan sumber daya ikan itu sendiri. Oleh karena itu penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisir jenis-jenis alat tangkap yang dioperasikan di perairan Teluk Manado, mengevaluasi kemungkinan dampak alat tangkap terhadap sumber daya ikan dan lingkungan, dan menganalisis status keberlanjutan perikanan tangkap. Penelitian ini didasarkan pada metode survei, melalui pengamatan langsung terhadap proses penangkapan ikan dan mengamati keragaman komposisi hasil tangkapan. Status keberlanjutan perikanan dianalisis dengan program Rapfish. Alat tangkap yang umum digunakan oleh nelayan di perairan Teluk Manado terdiri dari yaitu pancing noru, pancing dasar, pancing tonda,  rawai dasar,  soma landra pajeko, soma landra rakit,  jaring insang dasar dan bubu. Alat tangkap yang tidak memberikan dampak terhadap sumber daya ikan dan lingkungan adalah pancing noru, pancing tonda, soma landra pajeko dan soma landra rakit. Sedangkan alat tangkap yang berpotensi memberikan dampak pada sumber daya ikan dan kerusakan fisik habitat dasar perairan adalah pancing dasar, rawai dasar, jaring insang dasar dan bubu. Hasil ordinasi status keberlanjutan perikanan tangkap di Teluk Manado yang dianalisis pada masing-masing dimensi masih tergolong cukup berkelanjutan.

Effects of a large-scale and offshore marine protected area on the demersal fish assemblage in the Southwest Atlantic. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70:123–134. There are few extensive and offshore located marine protected areas (MPAs) in the world oceans and their performance is still being debated. We evaluated the effects of a large-scale offshore MPA located on the Southwest Atlantic Patagonian Shelf (43°S 63°W) on the demersal fish assemblage. Compliance of the Patagonian MPA was assessed by analysing eight years of satellite vessel monitoring system (VMS; 2000–2008) data, which showed compliance and fishing effort concentrated near the protection boundaries. MPA effects were studied by employing a five year database collected by a scientific research vessel in protected and fishing locations, before and after the MPA establishment. We assessed 152 scientific trawling stations using multivariate analysis of fish assemblage structure, fish abundance (discriminating target and non-target species), and mean size and proportion of juveniles of the target species (Argentine hake, Merluccius hubbsi). The identified MPA effects were a trend towards increasing abundance of the demersal fish assemblage, the target and non-target fish species, and hake juvenile size, and a higher proportion of juveniles aged 2+ inside the MPA. These positive trends support the case for offshore, large-scale MPAs.

This study compares density and size structure of kelp Lessonia berteroana and sea urchins Loxechinus albus inside and outside a port concession area in Caldera. Greater abundance and larger adult individuals in populations of both benthic resources in this zone preliminarily indicates that this might be replicating a marine protected area. In the future, this port concession could contribute to the conservation of benthic resources as a reference site, without access to fisheries, useful for validating or implementing measures and actions in management plans or other instruments to support conservation.

A literatura sobre incentivos para conservar a biodiversidade frequentemente sobrepõe processos e resultados. Há necessidade de revisar os principais resultados, como governança e co-manejo; os principais processos, como confiança, legitimidade e transparência; os principais ‘drivers’ (motivadores, fatores impulsionadores) que podem ser positivos (incentivos, segurança alimentar, biodiversidade) ou negativos (poluição, pobreza); como ainda os instrumentos disponíveis para alcançar resultados, como processos colaborativos e conhecimento local (‘local ecological knowledge, LEK’). LEK é sugerida aqui como tendo um grande potencial dentro de processos colaborativos em comunidades pesqueiras. Um Modelo de Ecologia Humana (CAT – Modelos de Adaptação Cultural), adaptado a comunidades pesqueiras de pequena escala, é usado como ferramenta analítica no sentido de organizar processos de ‘feedback’ entre informação ecológica, processos colaborativos e segurança alimentar. Ilustramos a colaboração com os pescadores através de pesquisa realizada em Copacabana (Posto 6), Rio de Janeiro, no estudo de garoupas (Epinephelus marginatus). Avaliamos ainda os motivadores positivos que podem engajar os pescadores no co-manejo, como PSA (Pagamentos de Serviços Ambientais). PSAs podem ser aplicados no co-manejo, como em MPAs (áreas protegidas marinhas) através de pagamento direto a pescadores que ajudem na vigilância dessas áreas.

Goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) aggregations and relative abundances were described and mapped through the use of fishermen's local ecological knowledge in Babitonga Bay in southern Brazil. Six well-experienced informants were asked to individually provide information about goliath grouper abundance and distribution, drawn over a satellite image of the study area, which was later overlaid and gathered into a final map. According to our informants, the goliath grouper occurs along a broad salinity and depth range, from shallow estuarine areas (less than 5 m deep) with high freshwater input (smaller individuals, up to 150 kg) to coastal marine-dominated environments (at least 35 m deep); (larger individuals more common, frequently reaching more than 300 kg). Fishermen referred to goliath groupers inhabiting hard substrates such as rocky reefs around islands and continental shores, submerged rocky outcrops and shipwrecks (juveniles and adults). At least two aggregation sites mapped (ranging from 2 to 60 individuals) could be concluded as spawning aggregation sites through evidence of high abundance and spawning activity. Priority research and conservation targets were identified and discussed for Babitonga Bay (e.g., design of a tagging experimental program and establishment of a marine protected area). Fishers' resource mapping provided a means of exchanging information among various disciplines while maintaining methodological rigor in a clear and straightforward way of presenting fishers' knowledge. The use of fishers' sketch maps is a promising tool for marine conservation in Brazil, with special regard to adaptive co-management regimes, where frequent environmental re-evaluations are needed.

AbstractWe followed landings of dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, from 2013 to 2019. We observed 1,896 individuals of dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, from September 2013 to February 2019. The total weight of the catches was 6,065.57 kg, with an average of 1,442.50 kg/year and a std of 147.30 kg.We integrated fishers in our study through citizen science (CS): individuals were trained to monitor grouper gonads and supplied information on fishing spots and prices. After comparing catch curves (based on weight) and curve prices (in the Brazilian monetary currency of reals), our results showed that catches in the Copacabana fishery have been stable (the results of the Kruskal-Wallis test showed no significant difference for either the weight of the catches or the average prices of dusky groupers in the years compared). Copacabana has been a sustainable fishery when considering its catches of dusky grouper. This is a very important result for conservation and management, considering the importance of small-scale fisheries in terms of their low fishing efforts and their possible effects on vulnerable species, as well as their ecological and economic importance in developing countries. Citizen science, alomng with local ecological knowledge, helps integrate research and fisheries as well as researchers and fishers and allows for larger sampling efforts and management training for fishers.
