RESUMO O presente estudo relata o caso de um veado-catingueiro jovem, provindo de vida livre e com histórico de atropelamento. Posteriormente à realização de exames, o animal foi diagnosticado com fratura exposta distal de tíbia (Salter-Harris tipo I) e fratura cominutiva de metáfise distal de fêmur, ambas em membro pélvico esquerdo. Para a osteossíntese da tíbia, foram utilizados pinos intramedulares de Steinmann inseridos pelos maléolos lateral e medial, de forma cruzada. A osteossíntese do fêmur foi realizada com associação de dois pinos de Steinmann, conforme técnica modificada de Rush, e placa de compressão dinâmica. As técnicas cirúrgicas adotadas foram satisfatórias para estabilização, consolidação de ambas as fraturas e retorno funcional do membro. Após 90 dias da cirurgia, o animal foi reintroduzido à natureza.

Successful treatment of humeral condylar fractures requires accurate reduction and rigid internal fixation which can be difficult to achieve in toy and/or miniature breed dogs. Stabilization of a Salter-Harris type IV physeal fracture of the numeral condyle was simplified by using Orthofix® partially-threaded Kirschner wire and provided excellent clinical results in a 1.5 kg miniature pinscher

Summary In vitro production of embryos has gained prominence as a tool for use in wildlife conservation programmes in situ and ex situ. However, the development of this technique depends on steps that include ovarian stimulation, collection and oocyte maturation. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of an ovarian stimulation protocol for follicular aspiration, the efficiency of videolaparoscopy for follicular aspiration and test a medium for in vitro oocyte maturation for the species Mazama gouazoubira. Five females were submitted to repeated ovarian stimulation (hormone protocol using controlled internal drug release), and estradiol benzoate on D0 and eight injections of follicle-stimulating hormone, once every 12 h, from D4 onwards at 30-day intervals. Fourteen surgical procedures were performed in superstimulated females, resulting in the collection of 94 oocytes and an average of 17.1 ± 9.1 follicles observed, 13.5 ± 6.6 follicles aspirated and 7.2 ± 3.7 oocytes collected per surgery. After collection, the oocytes were submitted to in vitro maturation for 24 h and stained with Hoechst 33342 dye to evaluate their nuclear status; 64.5% of the oocytes reached MII and 16.1% were spontaneously activated by parthenogenesis. The nuclear status of oocytes that did not undergo in vitro maturation was evaluated; 80.9% were found to be immature.

Abstract Background Paediatric forearm fractures are commonly encountered in Trauma and Orthopaedics. Currently most forearm fractures are manipulated in theatre the following day, increasing resource burden and delays in management. The aim of this project was to introduce guidelines to reduce fractures in the Emergency Department (ED) using intranasal Diamorphine and Entonox. Method 197 cases were identified over a 6-month period in 2018 and 2019. 74 distal radial fractures and 123 mid shaft forearm fractures were analysed. Fractures with an intact periosteal hinge or a Salter Harris type 2 were reduced in ED. The pre manipulation and post manipulation radiographs were compared with particular attention to the post reduction angles. Results 67% of fractures were reduced in the correct setting. A number of fractures reduced in ED required re-manipulation or internal fixation. Overall, there was a 56% reduction in patients undergoing general anaesthetic. There was a reduction in the mean length of stay from 36 hours to 3.5 hours. Conclusions Intranasal Diamorphine and Entonox offer a safe method for managing paediatric forearm fractures in ED. Implementation of this method facilitates early access to treatment and early patient discharge. Manipulation in ED offers significant financial savings and reduces demands on the Trauma Theatres.

Objective:To present the case of an 18-year-old collegiate decathlete with a Salter-Harris type I epiphyseal plate fracture of the proximal humerus.Background:A collegiate decathlete was playing flag football and fell on an outstretched arm. He was taken to the emergency room and diagnosed with a type I epiphyseal plate fracture.Differential Diagnosis:AC sprain, dislocation or subluxation, rotator cuff tear, labral tear.Treatment:Active and passive range of motion exercises were completed after two days of immobilization. He then started strengthening exercises and returned to competitive activity in 10 weeks.Uniqueness:Proximal humeral epiphyseal plate fractures are uncommon injuries, especially in athletes over the age of 15.Conclusions:If an accurate diagnosis is made, an appropriate conservative rehabilitation program can be implemented to safely return an athlete to participation without permanent deformity following a type I Salter-Harris fracture.
