A New Species of Eugenia subg. Pseudeugenia (Myrtaceae, Myrteae) from Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Abstract—A new species of Eugenia from the Atlantic forest of Brazil is described and illustrated. Eugenia flavicarpa is restricted to the Floresta de Tabuleiro (lowland forests) of Espírito Santo state and is nested in Eugenia subg. Pseudeugenia. Considering all other species of the subgenus that occur in forest vegetation types of the Atlantic forest phytogeographic domain, Eugenia flavicarpa can be distinguished mainly by the combination of smooth leaves with indumentum on both surfaces, with two marginal veins, usually ramiflorous inflorescences, pedicels 4.5‐9.7 mm long, flower buds 3.5‐4 mm in diameter, and by the calyx lobes that are 2‐3 mm long with rounded to obtuse apices. Morphological analyses were performed to explore the significance of quantitative diagnostic features between the new species and the closely related species, Eugenia farneyi. Notes on the habitat, distribution, phenology, and conservation status of Eugenia flavicarpa are provided, as well as a key for all species of Eugenia subg. Pseudeugenia from forest vegetation of the Atlantic forest phytogeographic domain.

A new species, Calea arachnoidea, which belongs to Calea sect. Meyeria, is hereby described and illustrated. This species occurs in the Serra Negra region, located in the southern portion of the “Zona da Mata” in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Calea arachnoidea resembles C. quadrifolia, C. heteropappa and C. semirii, and its relationships with these species are discussed and an identification key for the species of C. sect. Meyeria in the state of Minas Gerais is provided. Additionally, photographs, a distribution map, comments about habitat and conservation status are provided.

Veronica ersin-yucelii (subg. Pentasepalae, Plantaginaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species. It grows on marble rocks and screes, in one single site in Central Anatolia (Eskişehir Province), at elevations from about 1700 to 1820 metres above sea level. Diagnostic features are also given to enable comparison with the most similar species, V. caespitosa Boiss. and V. multifida L., especially regarding the indumentum, habit, inflorescence, bracts, seeds and leaves. The geographical distribution of the new species is mapped. Notes about its ecology and conservation status are also presented.

Myrcia adulterina, a new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, is here described, illustrated and compared with morphologically related species. Additionally, its distribution map and a preliminary conservation status are presented. The new species is here inferred as belonging to Myrcia sect. Reticulosae due its leaves with raised venation, staminal ring densely pilose, hypanthium prolonged in a tube with glabrous inner walls and 3-locular ovaries. Within this section, the species is morphologically related to Myrcia pubipetala, from which it can be distinguished through the laxly reticulate leaf venation and thyrsoid inflorescences with all axes strongly flattened and striated when dry. Myrcia adulterina was misidentified during at least 15 years in herbaria under the name Marlierea tomentosa (currently synonym of Myrcia strigipes, a species belonging to Myrcia sect. Aulomyrcia), which is also morphologically similar. A brief discussion clarifying the morphological differences between these species is also presented.

Two specimens of an apparently new Bulbophylum species were found in the Monts de Cristal, Gabon. They have a unique leaf shape among the species of this genus in Continental Africa. The flower shares the general morphology of Bulbophyllum saltatorium, one of the most common members of Bulbophyllum in Central Africa. Eight other taxa of the Continental African Bulbophyllum possess unifoliate pseudobulbs and long hairs on the lip. Comparison with them indicates that the new collections from Gabon represent a distinctive species, not yet known in the genus. We describe it here as Bulbophyllum pauwelsianum. The distinguishing features of the species include its leaves, which are pendant, coriaceous, linear, semiterete and v-shaped in transverse section, and its sepals, which possess relatively long hairs on their margins. A table of the taxonomic treatments of the nine Continental African Bulbophyllum taxa considered here is included. A taxonomic key and a table of the diagnostic characters of these nine taxa are given to facilitate identification. The new species is restricted to lowland forests of the Monts de Cristal in Gabon. A preliminary assessment of the conservation status, using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria is provided.

We described a new species of Phyllanthus currently known from a single fragment of Ombrophilous Dense Forest in the Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Phyllanthus pedicellatus is the second species of the genus with phylloclades found in the Atlantic Forest domain, once mostly Brazilian Phyllanthus with these kinds of specialized branches grow in open vegetation as “campos rupestres” and cerrado. The name is a reference to its remarkable pedicels of pistillate flowers. We present illustrations and photographs of the new species in its habitat, comments on its relationships to other Brazilian Phyllanthus, and its conservation status.

Abstract— Plants from Brazilian campos rupestres usually present morphological strategies that allow them to survive in extreme environments. However, in Chamaecrista (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae), one of the most diverse genera in the campos rupestres, needle-like leaflets are rare. Reviewing the species that present such leaf morphology, we describe Chamaecrista acicularis, a new species from the Canastra Range, in the southwestern region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that C. acicularis is not closely related to other quite similar needle-like leafleted species and that this trait evolved convergently. We also present comments on the phylogenetic relationships of needle-like leafleted species as well as the evolution of the leaflet amplitude, and a detailed description of C. acicularis alongside illustrations, photos, geographical distribution, a key to the needle-like leafleted species and taxonomic notes on similar species. Additionally, we expand the description of Chamaecrista strictifolia and present an informal conservation status for all needle-like leafleted species.

Begonia margaretiana, a new species of Begonia sect. Pritzelia from Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil is described. Begonia margaretiana is morphologically similar to Begonia paulensis, with which it is compared. The new species grow in hygrophilous Atlantic Forest in the south of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Description, comparisons with a morphologically similar species, etymology, taxonomic comments, illustrations, a map, and the conservation status of the new species are provided.

We describe and illustrate Wahlenbergia itatiaiensis, a new species of Campanulaceae, endemic to the Itatiaia National Park in the Atlantic Forest (Brazil). The new species is compared with W. linarioides, the sympatric and morphologically most similar species, and to W. intermedia. Wahlenbergia itatiaiensis is mainly distinguished by the linear to lanceolate leaves with few, short denticles along the margin, 3-locular ovary, and 3-lobed stigma. An identification key for these species is provided. The new species occurs on sandy and rocky, wet soils, adjacent to dirt roadsides of the upper part of the National Park. Detailed comments on the distribution and conservation status, as well as details of morphological variation and photographs are provided.

A new species, Myrcia suberosa, is here proposed based in an ongoing taxonomic revision of Myrcia sect. Eugeniopsis, a group nearly endemic to the Atlantic Forest. Myrcia suberosa occurs in Brazil from Southern Bahia to Southern Rio de Janeiro states, but only three collections are known and the real distribution of the species is barely known. The new species is morphologically related to Myrcia pseudomarlierea and Myrcia teuscheriana, differing by sexual system, cork thickness, indument, and leaf and flower morphologies. Morphological description, images and conservation status are provided, as well as discussion about distribution, habitat, phenology and taxonomy.

Vriesea mimosoensis is described and illustrated as a new taxon from the Atlantic Forest in Espírito Santo, Southeastern Brazil. Morphological comparisons of this taxon with related species are presented. Here we discuss taxonomy comments, etymology, geographical distribution and the conservation status of this new species.
