The problem of evacuating two robots from the disk in the face-to-face model was first introduced by Czyzowicz et al. [DISC’2014], and has been extensively studied (along with many variations) ever since with respect to worst-case analysis. We initiate the study of the same problem with respect to average-case analysis, which is also equivalent to designing randomized algorithms for the problem. In particular, we introduce constrained optimization problem 2EvacF2F, in which one is trying to minimize the average-case cost of the evacuation algorithm given that the worst-case cost does not exceed w. The problem is of special interest with respect to practical applications, since a common objective in search-and-rescue operations is to minimize the average completion time, given that a certain worst-case threshold is not exceeded, e.g., for safety or limited energy reasons. Our main contribution is the design and analysis of families of new evacuation parameterized algorithms which can solve 2EvacF2F, for every w for which the problem is feasible. Notably, the worst-case analysis of the problem, since its introduction, has been relying on technical numerical, computer-assisted calculations, following tedious robot trajectory analysis. Part of our contribution is a novel systematic procedure, which given any evacuation algorithm, can derive its worst- and average-case performance in a clean and unified way.

In Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) guides the inspection and production of beef meat and prescribes the good practices pertinent to beef products’ handling, processing, and packaging. Specifically, good hygiene practice (GHP) assures beef product safety and consumer protection, whereas good storage practice (GSP) assures the continuity of hygiene activities within the storage stages. Relevant literature about butchers’ knowledge and perception of good hygiene and storage practices within Nigeria slaughterhouses remains scant. This current study, therefore, assessed butchers’ knowledge and perception of good hygiene and storage practices through a cattle slaughterhouse case analysis. The selected cattle slaughterhouse serves the increasingly thriving Nsukka beef market in Enugu State, Nigeria. Content validation was utilised to authenticate the questionnaire items, which were administered face-to-face to the respondents (i.e., the butchers). The questionnaire included a total of 30 questions. The results showed that the butchers were male (Freq. = 100%, n = 50), acquired their knowledge informally (Freq. = 88%, n = 44), were largely with more than 5 years of slaughterhouse experience (Freq. = 82%, n = 41), and were strongly (p < 0.0001) familiar with good hygiene (Freq. = 96%, n = 48) and storage (Freq. = 98%, n = 49) practices. The butchers provided examples that demonstrated knowledge and perception aspects of GHP and GSP. The perception aspects of GHP and GSP were correlated more, compared to knowledge and knowledge versus perception. Very conscious of their knowledge and perception of good hygiene and storage practices, the butchers herein have to strive for continuous improvement in their slaughterhouse activities to assure beef quality and consumer safety.

ABSTRACT: Questo saggio si propone il fine di misurare l’impatto della transizione dalla didattica in aula a quella a distanza nel contesto dei corsi di italiano per principianti offerti, nel semestre autunnale 2020, dal Programma di Italiano dell’università canadese Dalhousie. Prendendo simultaneamente in considerazione i risultati del feedback formale e informale fornito dagli allievi, i dati raccolti tramite la ricerca-azione e l’osservazione dei corsi da parte di specialisti esterni, e una molteplicità di parametri valutativi, il presente intervento mira a delineare alcuni vantaggi e svantaggi dell’insegnamento a distanza dell’italiano come lingua straniera.Parole-chiave: Didattica dell’italiano. Ricerca-azione. RESUMO: Este artigo analisa o impacto da transição das aulas presenciais ao formato virtual, especificamente no contexto das três seções do curso “Italiano para Iniciantes” oferecido no segundo semestre de 2020 pelo Programa de Italiano da Universidade de Dalhousie, Canadá. There is renewed interest in out-of-school programs for informal learning as a way to complement or supplement formal classrooms. Compelling evidence of learning in the context of virtual worlds is emerging, but few empirically detailed comparisons of programs based on such technologies exist. This article presents a cross-case analysis conducted on two out-of-school programs based on virtual environments involving Global Kid’s “I Dig Science” situated in the virtual platform Teen Second Life and Games, Learning & Society Program’s “Casual Learning Lab” based on the massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft. Ethnographic methods were used for data collection across both in-game and face-to-face contexts at both sites with virtual and face-to-face data collection techniques used in combination. Analysis involved a code set of eleven a priori themes based on the shared goals of each program, resulting in 44 codes total. In this paper, the authors detail contrasts between the two programs in terms of argumentation, problem-solving, information literacy, and workplace skills, highlighting differences between the two programs in terms of their contrasting “locus of intentionality” (designer versus participant) and concluding with a set of “petite generalizations” in the form of design heuristics for future virtual worlds based programs.

Background: Currently, medical education program has implemented the student-centred education method by using Problem Based Learning (PBL) paradigm. One of its assessment methods is Student Oral Case Analysis (SOCA). This method determines the rhetorical and linguistic characteristics of students by using specific communication methods. An offline assessment is temporarily selected for the SOCA. Due to the pandemic, strict health protocols for medical education should be followed by any parties. As a result, there is a modification for learning method when offline (face-to-face) activities should be shifted to online activities, includes SOCA assessment. However, to meet the objective of the learning, the modification needs careful planning and implementation. This study aimed to describe about how The Faculty of Medicine, Prof. DR. Hamka Muhammadiyah University (UHAMKA) successfully carried out SOCA assessment for their students through online method.Case Discussion: During the outbreak of Covid-19 The Faculty of Medicine, UHAMKA, has changed SOCA assessment from offline mode to online mode by using Zoom application. Pre-exam preparation includes a review of the questions by the Medical Education Unit team, preparation of human resources (examiners, supervisors), and supporting applications. The assessment is conducted by applying some adjustments between medical learning activities and current health protocols.  Subsequently, upon completion of the assessment, an evaluation is conducted using a questionnaire and random interview technique.Conclusion: The Zoom platform’s online method is an effective option for SOCA assessment during the pandemic. It can be concluded that the exam was successfully implemented to the student and it produced relatively similar results with an offline exam. The online SOCA assessment at Faculty of Medicine UHAMKA was well organized without any serious problem.
