SUMMARYA decline in supplies of organic manures and the increased use of chemical fertilizers has led to a decrease in the micronutrient content of the soil, with attendant effects on yield.Field studies were conducted in 1986 and 1987 at the Giza Agricultural Research Centre, Egypt, to determine the effect of Cu-EDTA and Mn-EDTA foliar sprays on growth, mineral content, yield components and fibre properties of the Egyptian cotton cultivar Giza 75 (Gossypium barbadense L.).All combinations used significantly increased the uptake of Cu and Mn and the dry matter yield. The earliness of harvest and the value of yield components were all increased by the application of Cu or Mn; 25 mg/1 of both Cu and Mn gave the highest values. Lint percentage and fibre properties were not significantly affected.This study indicated that the yield of cotton, grown under otherwise standard conditions, may be increased by foliar sprays of Cu-EDTA and Mn-EDTA combined.

Foliar sprays with gibberellic acid (GA) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) of di erent concentra ons at pre-flowering stage induced hermaphrodite and male owers on strictly gynoecious vines of teasle gourd (Momordica subangulata Blume. subsp. renigera). GA at 1500 ppm and AgNO3at 500 ppm were effective inducing more than 50% male owers in the female clone “Mondouri local”. AgNO3 at 750 ppm was effective in inducing 36.6% male and 33.9% hermaphrodite owers on same plant. The hermaphrodite ower had higher pollen size (103.57 μm) compared to that of natural male ower (94.94 μm). However, there existed no variation between pollen viability of bisexual ower (81.6%) and normal male ower (89.1%). However, germinability of the pollen of hermaphrodite ower was very low (14.16%) producing very small pollen tube (9 μm), though the bisexual ower did not produce any fruit on self-pollination.

AgriPhage applied as a preventative foliar spray significantly reduced severity of bacterial canker of greenhouse tomato in two of three years. Area under the disease progress curves (AUDPC) indicated that AgriPhage slowed the progression of bacterial canker symptom development by 50% and 59% in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Plant mortality was significantly reduced by 76% in 2006 as compared to the inoculated control. AgriPhage-treated plants produced significantly greater total yield in 2006 only. Copper and Kasumin sprays also significantly reduced severity (AUDPC) of bacterial canker in 2007 as compared to the inoculated control. However, none of these treatments reduced symptom development or increased yield in 2008. Accepted for publication 9 April 2009. Published 12 May 2009.

Mixed and compound fertilizers made from superphosphate and manganous sulphate were compared in field experiments as sources of manganese for barley on the calcareous soils of southern Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. The compound fertilizers were made by blending manganous sulphate with 'den-fresh' superphosphate before the granulation process: mixed fertilizers were made by mixing the components after manufacture. The fertilizers were applied at sowing at rates of 19 kg haw1P and 16 kg haelMn in one experiment and 28 kg ha-1 P and 6 kg ha-1 Mn in a second experiment. In the latter, up to three foliar sprays of manganous sulphate (1.3 kg ha-1 Mn per spray) were applied in addition. The rate at which the fertilizers reacted with the soil was studied in an incubation experiment, and the nutrient content of particle-size fractions of the fertilizers was also determined. Plant dry weight, manganese and phosphorus uptake, and grain yield were increased to a greater extent by application of the compound fertilizer than by the mixed fertilizer. Application of compound fertilizers at sowing also delayed the appearance of manganese deficiency symptoms in crops by two weeks compared with mixed fertilizers. Neither fertilizer prevented the occurrence of manganese deficiency and further yield increases were obtained by subsequent foliar sprays of manganous sulphate. Fertilizer manganese was rapidly immobilized in the soil. After 167 hours' incubation, approximately three quarters of that added in manganous sulphate, and in the mixed and compound fertilizers was not extractable in divalent form. The variation in nutrient content of particle size fractions of a compound fertilizer was much less than that in a mixed fertilizer.
