This study presents experimental investigations on the mechanisms of the repeatability of positioning of linear axes of computer numerical control machine tools. First, the factors affecting the repeatability of positioning of linear axes are obtained based on orthogonal experiments. Second, the mechanism of each factor affecting the repeatability of positioning is studied based on single-factor experiments. Finally, an assembly method to improve the repeatability of positioning of linear axes is proposed. The method can provide designers and workers with informative guidelines for improving the repeatability of positioning in design and assembly processes.

Machine tools using numerical control (NC) devices are typical mechatronics products and a powerful way to automate plant production. The introduction of multiaxis control and multitasking machine tools to workshops is growing to meet the requirements of highly efficient, precision machining of a variety of complex products and mold dies. The increase in the number of control axes and multitasking capability in one chucking process enable machine tools to manufacture complex products efficiently and accurately. Given the strong attention and interest multiaxis control and multitasking machine tools are attracting, it is about time to introduce the current state of the art of these tools and their practical and applicable technologies, especially in Japan. This special issue covers the development of 5-axis control machining centers, machine tools having multispindle heads with 5-axis control, 5-axis control CAMs, accuracy evaluation for 5-axis control machine tools, and more. We thank the authors for their interesting papers to this special issue, and are certain that both general readers and specialists will find the information they provide both interesting and informative.

Reliability is most important to the CNC machine tools and reliability estimation is a very important part of the reliability which has magnificence to allocate resources and put forward scientific policy. Reliability evaluation of computer numerical control machine tools can use all sorts of effective information to decrease the size of test samples and save the development costs and shorten the production cycle. The paper put forward to use D-S evidence theory and the information of experts system to decrease the uncertainty of the reliability evaluation of computer numerical control machine tools. The results show that the method can effectively decrease the uncertainty of the reliability evaluation of computer numerical control machine tools.

This article focuses on reconfigurable machining systems. These systems have lately caught the attention of some manufacturers who need something that is more flexible than a dedicated line and produces goods faster than a shop of CNC machines. The lines are called reconfigurable because they consist of modules and, once they are programmed, can be switched quickly to turn out different, but similar pieces from a family of products. Proponents say that reconfigurable machining systems have carved out a niche between two other alternatives—dedicated transfer lines, which are optimized for producing large volumes of specific parts, and computer numerical control machine tools, which have a high degree of flexibility but are slower to finish products. Reconfigurable machining systems have been developed for the automotive industry, for instance, as car companies have increasingly outsourced their production to tier-one suppliers and demanded price reductions.

Nowadays, although more and more companies focus on improving the quality of computer numerical control machine tools, its reliability control still remains as an unsolved problem. Since assembly reliability control is very important in product reliability assurance in China, a new key assembly processes extraction method based on the integration of quality function deployment; failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis; and fuzzy theory for computer numerical control machine tools is proposed. Firstly, assembly faults and assembly reliability control flow of computer numerical control machine tools are studied. Secondly, quality function deployment; failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis; and fuzzy theory are integrated to build a scientific extraction model, by which the key assembly processes meeting both customer functional demands and failure data distribution can be extracted, also an example is given to illustrate the correctness and effectiveness of the method. Finally, the assembly reliability monitoring system is established based on key assembly processes to realize and simplify this method.
