Livestock depredation by carnivores is a globally pervasive and detrimental interaction that leads to economic loss and retaliatory killings. Livestock trailed annually on US Rangelands impact wildlife communities- competing with ungulate herbivores for forage, disrupting predator-prey dynamics, and shifting community structures. In order to promote coexistence in these human-wildlife systems, a better understanding of how these processes interact is needed. However, studies on the topic fail to fully capture both the spatial and temporal signals of moving livestock herds. In this study I investigated the effects of sheep grazing on a wildlife community in the Big Wood River Valley, Idaho. I developed a grazing covariate that was temporally informed; and used a scaffolded modeling technique of single- and multi-species occupancy models to evaluate the effects of grazing and environmental factors on spatiotemporal processes of wildlife. Using an array of remote-triggered cameras, I sampled wildlife occurrence of focal carnivores including gray wolves (Canis lupus), American black bear (Ursus americanus), coyote (Canis latrans), and mountain lions (Puma concolor), along with ungulate herbivores mule deer (Odocoileus hemonius), elk (Cervus canadensis), and moose (Alces americanus). I evaluated processes of detection and occupancy using a single-species model for each species, two 2-species models including wolves and elk and wolves and coyotes, and a 5-species community model including bears, coyotes, mule deer, elk, and wolves. I found that the detection of bears, wolves, and mule deer was positively related in activity to grazing and 16-day NDVI (changing greenness), while the detection of elk was negatively related to grazing and 16-day NDVI. These results suggest a divergence in community makeup as sheep move into an area- increasing predator activity and shifting prey community structure. Furthermore, this work shows that including a temporally informed grazing covariate into a multi-species modeling structure can effectively predict changes in wildlife community activity when livestock are present. These findings have important insights for livestock and wildlife management as the livestock-carnivore human-wildlife system grows more prevalent and pertinent.

AbstractThe Annamite mountains of Viet Nam and the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao) are an area of exceptional mammalian endemism but intensive poaching has defaunated much of the region, creating an extinction crisis for the endemic species. To make efficient use of limited conservation resources, it is imperative that conservation stakeholders obtain basic information about poorly known and threatened endemics. We present the first comprehensive information on the ecology, distribution and status of the little-known endemic Annamite striped rabbit Nesolagus timminsi. We used a systematic camera-trapping design to study the species in five areas in Viet Nam and Lao. In 29,180 camera-trap-nights we recorded 152 independent events at 36 of 266 stations. We obtained an additional 143 independent detections across 12 stations from a supplementary non-systematic survey. We analysed activity patterns and social behaviour. We also used single-species occupancy models to assess factors that influence occupancy at the landscape scale. We used N-mixture models to obtain local abundance estimates in one target area. The Annamite striped rabbit was found to be nocturnal and primarily solitary. Species occupancy was best explained by a proxy for past hunting pressure, with no significant relationships to current anthropogenic or environmental factors. Local abundance was 0.57 individuals per camera-trap station for one of our sites, and estimated to be zero at the other site where hunting appears to have been more intense. Our results provide information on priority areas for targeted anti-poaching efforts and give the first conservation baseline for the species.

Tropical forests comprise a critically impacted habitat, and it is known that altered forests host a lower diversity of mammal communities. In this study, we investigated the mammal communities of two areas in Myanmar with similar environmental conditions but with great differences in habitat degradation and human disturbance. The main goal was to understand the status and composition of these communities in an understudied area like Myanmar at a broad scale. Using camera trap data from a three-year-long campaign and hierarchical occupancy models with a Bayesian formulation, we evaluated the biodiversity level (species richness) and different ecosystem functions (diet and body mass), as well as the occupancy values of single species as a proxy for population density. We found a lower mammal diversity in the disturbed area, with a significantly lower number of carnivores and herbivores species. Interestingly, the area did not show alteration in its functional composition. Almost all the specific roles in the community were present except for apex predators, thus suggesting that the effects of human disturbance are mainly effecting the communities highest levels. Furthermore, two species showed significantly lower occupancies in the disturbed area during all the monitoring campaigns: one with a strong pressure for bushmeat consumption and a vulnerable carnivore threatened by illegal wildlife trade.
