A technique is described to facilitate impression making and safely obtain the definitive cast for removable partial dentures with long, retentive, or lone-standing abutment teeth. Firstly, the individualized stock tray receives a coating of melted wax. Next, the prepared teeth are impressed with irreversible hydrocolloid, and the set impression is removed from mouth. The mold is then poured conventionally and, after the gypsum has set, is immersed in hot water to soften the wax and allow removal of the tray. The impression material is carefully cut away with a scalpel blade to expose the cast. With these straightforward and easily made changes compared with the conventional technique, the risk of fracturing the definitive cast is minimized, especially when reproducing long retentive teeth. A dental technique is presented that uses wax to coat the impression tray to facilitate the passive displacement of the cast. This results in a straightforward and precise definitive cast for removable partial dentures.

ABSTRACT Objectives: The aim was to evaluate the effect of adding povidone (PVP) iodine powder with different concentrations to irreversible hydrocolloid on both microbiological and dimensional stability. Materials and Methods: Regular set of (alginate) irreversible hydrocolloid was selected as control group. PVP-iodine powder was mixed with the alginate powder at concentrations of 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20% by weight (test groups). All specimens were tested for their antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus as well as dimensional stability. Results: The results of test groups showed that concentrations 1, 5, and 10, weight % had little effect against S. mutans and S. aureus microorganisms. While concentrations 15 and 20 weight % had demonstrated greater effect on microbial growth. The mean of dimensional stability in mm of modified alginate with PVP-iodine at 15 and 20 weight % was –0.119 ± 0.255 and –0.035 ± 0.074, respectively. While the mean dimensional stability in mm of unmodified alginate was –0.112 ± 0.176 . The results of dimensional stability showed that 15 and 20 concentrations of test groups adversely affect the dimensional stability. The adverse effect was noticed to be significant in concentration 20%, where as it was nonsignificant in 15% concentration. Conclusion: Modified alginate impression material with 15 weight % PVP-iodine powered give the material, a self-disinfected properties with less deteriorating effect on dimensional stability.

The Leap protocol combines the newest and most active association of reciprocal-rotary instrumentation, aluminum insert ultrasonic, and diode laser. The reciprocal-rotary technique consists of Niti instruments used in different motions depending on the stage of the treatment and promotes the balanced cutting effectiveness and reduced risk of fracture files. Moreover, it creates a centered and tapered shape. The aluminum tip for the ultrasonic unit delivers agitation, emulsification, and cavitation of antiseptic solutions that improve the cleaning. The dye and laser use cause the ablation and final disinfection. This paper describes the case of a patient with asymptomatic apical periodontitis in an upper first right molar submitted to endodontic treatment performed with Leap protocol. After conventional procedures, the root canals were prepared by using reciprocal-rotary instrumentation techniques. Between each file a new solution was placed and activated with the ultrasonic handpiece. At the end of instrumentation, the root canals were aspirated, dried with paper points, the indocyanine dye was placed into the root canals and, DaVinci laser was used for 30 seconds. The gutta-percha cones matching the final Niti file were used coated with AH Plus sealer. A periapical radiograph was taken to verify obturation and its anatomical complexity. Six months after the procedure, the patient was asymptomatic, and the radiographic examination showed healthy periradicular tissues. It is concluded that the use of Leap protocol in conventional endodontic treatment was effective, suggesting that this therapy may provide additional benefits to patients when compared to the conventional technique.
