<p>This article aims to provide the results of a research focusing on 12th graders’ attitudes towards English as a Foreign Language in two secondary schools in Puerto Montt, Chile. Attitude towards a language has been considered as an important factor that influences the process of learning a foreign language (Shams, 2008); for this reason, it is fundamental to identify students’ attitudes since positive attitudes towards English allow the students to have favourable orientation towards learning it (Karahan, 2007). Under this premise, this study corresponds to a case study that includes a quantitative method of data analysis. A survey of five dimensions was conducted amongst 154 students in order to measure their attitudes towards the target language. The results show that their attitudes towards English as a foreign language are favourable; however, the dimensions related to learning English, and English as a subject at school obtained unfavourable attitudes. </p>

In teaching and learning a foreign language, especially English, motivation plays an extremely integral part in ensuring success. In this study, the researchers attempt to provide an overview of research on motivation and discover how motivation can assist second or foreign language learning in classrooms of English-majored students in the university setting. This study aims to investigate whether English-majored learners are motivated in learning English or not, focusing on extrinsic motivational factors to identify the factors to develop their motivation and maintain their journey of learning English. A questionnaire is devised and administered to 52 senior English-majored students. The data was then analyzed using the SPSS version 20. The results suggest that learners’ motivation is related to learning facilities and teacher’s personality which can encourage learners to think more positively and thus be more motivated in their language learning process. Along with providing specific recommendations for further research on motivation, the paper concludes by calling on for adopting a range of motivational factors that can promote English as a foreign or second language learning.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to investigate the beliefs of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in a mixed-ability class of a private university in Yogyakarta. Having 30 respondents who took an English class at the Language Training Centre of the university, this study mostly employed a quantitative research design, through which data were taken using the BALLI questionnaire consisting of 35 question items.  To support the quantitative data, interview were conducted. The quantitative data were analyzed using a 5-point Likert-scale, while the qualitative data were verbally described.  The results show that learners’ self-efficacy and expectation about learning English is low (3.20); learners’ perceived value and nature of learning spoken English is fair (3.76); learners’ beliefs about foreign language aptitude is low (3.11); learners’ beliefs in formal structural studies (3.11) is also low. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers evaluate their teaching approach and strategy in order to increase students’ motivation, confidence, and interest in learning English which can eventually promote learners’ success in learning English as a foreign language.ABSTRAKTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki keyakinan bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing (EFL) pada kelas dengan kemampuan campuran di universitas swasta di Yogyakarta.
