The present research aimed to study the rhetorical patterns in students’ writings, whether they follow a deductive pattern or an inductive pattern, and whether the pattern is similar when writing in English and the Indonesian language. The sample for this study was 20 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education majoring in English Education in several universities in Indonesia. Participants were requested to write two essays and two email-format letters, one of each was written in English, the other in the Indonesian language. The results showed that all students preferred the deductive pattern for their two types of essays. However, for the letter writing, students preferred the inductive pattern more than the deductive one, with 12 students using the inductive pattern in their letters in English and 16 students using the inductive pattern in their letters in Indonesian. It is suggested that the Indonesian culture and the teaching instructions received in the classrooms may influence students’ choice of the patterns they use in different types of writings. The findings should give valuable information for the design of teaching writing courses in English Education majors in Indonesia.

This research was conducted with a descriptive-qualitative approach with a case study as the research design. Data was collected by conducting interviews via Google Form with open-ended questions, the number of students who were used as respondents was 30 students from the Department of English Education. This study aims to examine the assessment process in the summary of assignments for the Seminar Proposal course for the English Education Department. This rapidly growing world of technology also affects aspects of education, education can be run online without the need for face-to-face meetings. Especially at this time where the world is being hit by the Covid-19 virus which increasingly requires people to stay at home. Learning is done entirely at home by relying on online learning. Even so, teachers still need to pay attention to choosing the right assessment for students in order to produce a positive washback effect from each given task. The results of this study indicate that the assignment has a positive washback effect because it is considered capable of improving students' English skills and abilities.

Learning English and introducing technology to children at a young age is becoming increasingly important in order to meet the demands of an era in which everything is now done in English and is based on technology. To do this, people resources are required who are fluent in two languages: English and technology, both of which are currently unavailable. This is due to a lack of understanding and mastery of technology-based English, which is one of them. The Community Service team of IAI As'adiyah held activities with practical methods related learning English based on macromedia flash based on the previous Community Service program carried out by FTK IAI As'adiyah Sengkang academics, which included training on the use of word and excel. It is envisaged that as a result of this project, PAUD teachers in the Sengkang City area will have more abilities and knowledge in technology-based English education, particularly employing macromedia flash.
