<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Flood is a major threat to one of the UNESCO world heritage site of India-The Kaziranga National Park. Every year during the monsoon several hundreds of animals which include globally threatened species like single-horned Indian Rhinoceros of Kaziranga lose their lives due to the flood. The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can be used to monitoring the flood than the optical remote sensors because of their capability of all-weather and time-independent operability. The microwave L band is most suitable for the flood studies because of its higher penetration capability even through the vegetation. In this study, the advantages of SAR polarimetry and Interferometry of multi-temporal L band dual-pol data of ALOS PALSAR 2 were used to characterize the flooded area and also to monitor the flood extent. The H/ A/ Alpha decomposition gives a better characterization of the flooded area. The separability analysis is done with a different combination of decomposition parameters and the parameters having high-class separability between water and non-water areas are selected. Polarimetric classification using Random forest classifier is done on these selected decomposition parameters to classify the study into water and non-water areas. The classified images of different months before, during and after the flood time is used to quantitatively estimate the flood extent and for time series analysis. The Interferometric SAR coherence images along with the backscatter images are used to generate the RGB composites which also gives times series information on the flood impact.</p>

<p><strong>INTRODUCTION</strong></p><p><strong></strong>Manas National Park is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site and a Project Tiger reserve, an elephant reserve and a biosphere reserve in Assam, India. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, it is contiguous with the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan. The park is known for its rare endangered and endemic wildlife such as the Assam roofed turtle, hispid hare, golden langur and pygmy hog. Manas is also famous for its population of the wild water buffalo.</p><p>Presently, Aaranyak is implementing working on a project viz. The Manas Tiger Conservation Programme (MTCP). It is led by Aaranyak and being implemented in partnership with the Forest Department BTC, Wildlife Conservation Trust, Panthera and Awely. The project has been supported by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Goal of the Project is to achieve 50% increase in tiger population in the next 10 years with enhanced protection measures, research and working on livelihood on the fringe area communities of MNP.</p><p>The scope of the survey is to understand the knowledge, skills and attitude of the target group in relation to their work place environment and job responsibilities. The objective is to assess their needs and quality of life in so far as conditions prevalent within the camps and the community in the fringe areas are concerned.  The data collected will enable the framing of appropriate measures to enhance holistic growth and efficiency in the functioning of the frontline staff and better protection of MNP. </p><p><strong>GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE</strong></p><p><strong></strong>The project covered 500 sq. km area of the park, more than 300 forest personnel are engaged spreading over 60 Camps to protect the rich flora and fauna of this World Heritage Site.</p><p><strong>OBJECTIVES</strong></p><p><strong></strong>To understand the quality of life in so far as conditions prevalent within the camps and the community in the fringe areas are concerned.</p><p>To understand the gap in knowledge, skills and attitude of the forest workers in relation to their work place environment and job responsibilities.</p><p><strong>TARGET GROUP</strong></p><p><strong></strong>The survey included frontline forest personnel working in Manas National Park, under Bodoland Territorial Council, Government of Assam.</p>

The Wadden Sea ecosystem is unique in many respects from a biological perspective. This is one reason why it is protected by national parks in Germany and by its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In biology didactics, there are only a few studies that focus on the Wadden Sea. This work investigates students’ word associations with the two stimulus words “national park” and “UNESCO World Heritage Site”. The survey was conducted among students living directly at the Wadden Sea and among students from the inland. The analysis of the identified associations (n = 8345) was carried out within the framework of a quantitative content analysis to be able to present and discuss the results on a group level. A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups. Overall, results showed that the students made subject-related associations as well as a large number of associations to both stimulus words that could be judged as non-subject-related. In some cases, a connection with the region of residence could be found, but this was not generally the case. Even students’ immediate residential proximity to the Wadden Sea is no guarantee that they have knowledge of the two considered protection terms.

Abstract Ecological risk assessment plays an important role in avoiding disasters and reducing losses. Natural world heritage site is the most precious natural assets on earth, yet few studies have assessed ecological risks from the perspective of world heritage conservation and management. A methodology for considering ecological threats and vulnerabilities and focusing on heritage value was introduced and discussed for the Bogda component of the Xinjiang Tianshan Natural World Heritage Site. Three important results are presented. (1) Criteria layers and ecological risk showed obvious spatial heterogeneity. Extremely high-risk and high-risk areas, accounting for 13.60% and 32.56%, respectively, were mainly gathered at Tianchi Lake and Bogda Glacier, whereas the extremely low-risk and low-risk areas, covering 1.33% and 17.51% of the site,were mainly distributed to the north and scattered around in the southwest montane region. (2) The level of risk was positively correlated with the type of risk, and as the level of risk increases, the types of risk increase. Only two risk types were observed in the extremely low-risk areas, whereas six risk types were observed in the high-risk areas and eight risk types were observed in the extremely high-risk areas. (3) From the perspective of risk probability and ecological damage, four risk management categories were proposed, and correlative strategies were proposed to reduce the possibility of ecological risk and to sustain or enhance heritage value.
