An isogeometric approach to the analysis of laminated composite smart shell structures based on the degenerated formulation and Mindlin–Reissner assumptions using non-uniform rational B-spline basis functions is the subject of this article. To model the laminated orthotropic smart free-form shells, the equivalent single layer theory is adopted, and an accurate approach to construct the local basis systems is used. To consider the electric potential in the piezoelectric layers, a sub-layer approach is employed that assumes linear variation over the thickness of the sub-layer. To investigate the performance of the approach, static, free vibration, and static control analysis of laminated composite shells covered with piezoelectric sensor and actuator layers with different degrees of basis functions is performed. Also, the effect of mechanical loading, various input voltages, and different boundary conditions on the static response and natural frequencies have been investigated. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the approach and validated with the existing results from the literature.

Contemporary architecture has witnessed a new innovative trend in design characterized by the creation of interesting free-flowing structures that reflect expressiveness of form and design, as well as the uniqueness of structure and approaches of construction. These fascinating structures are often perceived as landmarks that blend harmoniously into their surroundings. In the last two decades, parametric design and advanced computational tools, with prefabrication and construction techniques, enabled architects and engineers to explore new materials and methods to create such impressive structures, breaking the obsolete ways of thinking. Several examples of free-form structures lack obviously to explore architectural potentialities, that enrich the intention of architect, are still unformulated. The main objective of the present paper includes a conceptual proposal exploring the architectural potentiality of the free-form structures, focusing on form-finding possibilities through optimizing both the geometry and the mass of the structure, to generate configurations that ensure self-supported forms with stable force equilibrium. The paper introduces two simplified analytical methods to achieve the efficiency of the free-form architectural structures: the first depends on using extra materials to strengthen surfaces (such as grid shell system), and the second includes changing the geometry to achieve high “strength-to-weight” ratio (such as folding or conical self supports). By applying these methods, it is possible to explore various form-finding possibilities that contribute to the generation of characteristic landmarks with impressive structures.

This paper presents a free vibration analysis of double curvature free form shaped shell structures using the B-spline shape functions approximation method. It is based on the Ritz method. The shell formulation is developed following the well known Ahmad degenerate approach including the effect of shear deformation. The assumed displacement field is described through non-uniform B-spline functions of any degree. The effect of locking is investigated and both reduced and modified quadrature integration rules are considered with the purpose of increasing the solution accuracy and diminishing the computational cost. Numerical simulation is reported for the evaluation of the eigensolution of plates, and of single and double curvature shells to test the effectiveness and the efficiency of the approach. The presence of spurious zero energy modes both at local and global level was investigated. The solutions are compared with other available analytical and numerical solutions, and discussed in detail.
