As the younger generation in Japan moves away from the sciences, the decreasing of scientific literacy is a concern, and the decreasing of communication skills is also a concern in the development of the information society. To enhance interest in science and technology, we gave classes using robots. Robot edutainment usually means a class in which students make robots, but we intended to improve communication skills by proposing a theater that uses robots. As a result, the proposed method showed an improvement in communication skills and in interest in science and technology.

This chapter focuses on the Swiss model of oncology communication skills training (CST), which was initiated in 1998 and has been declared mandatory in 2005 for physicians specializing in medical oncology. It first discusses the development and implementation of this CST, its setting, and the specific objectives of the training—illustrated by examples from interviews videotaped during a CST session. Particular attention is then paid to trainers’ observations of communication difficulties of participants (e.g. under- or overstructured interviews, information not adapted to the patient’s needs) and to the specific features of the Swiss CST, namely: interdisciplinary training (working with physicians and nurses); individual insight-oriented supervision; and mandatory training. The final section of the chapter is devoted to the different scientific projects investigating the Swiss CST (e.g. communication and psychodynamic aspects of the training (clinicians’ defence mechanisms), impact of the training on working alliance, and linguistic strategies).

Academic performance and learning is a widely studied research area. It incorporates various aspects and can be measured through a plethora of dimensions including the performance of students in standardized tests, their grades and GPA in university courses, the rate of graduation, the rate of class participation, entrance tests of colleges, the overall class performance of students and so on. In this research we have taken blogging, reading, writing and communication skills as the independent variables on which the academic performance and learning is dependent. The population for this quantitative research was the students of National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan.

Work has recently begun in the Physics Department of the Manchester College of Science and Technology on an attempt to simulate lunar luminescence in the laboratory. This programme is running parallel with that of our colleagues in the Manchester University Astronomy Department, who are making observations of the luminescent spectrum of the Moon itself. Our instruments are as yet only partly completed, but we will describe briefly what they are to consist of, in the hope that we may benefit from the comments of others in the same field, and arrange to co-ordinate our work with theirs.
