In this paper, employing reservoir simulation and mathematical analysis methods, considering typical heavy oil reservoir and fluid thermal properties, the heating and producing shape of thermal recovery with horizontal well for different heavy oil reservoirs including ordinary, extra and super heavy oil are investigated based on the modification of thermal recovery parameters of different viscosity. By introducing heating radius and producing radius and considering the coupling effect of temperature, pressure and oil saturation fields, a quantitative expression between heating radius/producing radius and oil viscosity, formation thickness is presented, so is the impact of oil viscosity on the heating radius. Results shows that for Cyclic Steam Stimulation, the producing radius of horizontal well is bigger than its heating radius for light oil, both of which, however, shrink with higher viscosity. Beyond a critical viscosity, where the heating radius equals to the producing radius, the heating radius of horizontal well would be bigger than its producing radius. More over, the critical viscosity shows tight relationship to the formation thickness.

The branch well G8-33-H1Z is the first fishbone horizontal well of Daqing. The fishbone horizontal well is one type of the branch horizontal wells, which drilling again two or more branch holes in the horizontal section of the horizontal well. This well lies in G21 block where is near to the west of Daqing oilfield Changyuan area and the northeast of G20 of the north Gaotaizi oilfield. The purpose of the drilling is using branch horizontal well to control more areal reserves and increasing drainable area to improve well production. This technique can improve the economic benefit of oilfield development, which saves drilling investment, makes full use of the upper borehole to improve the comprehensive exploitation degree of the reservoir and achieves highly efficient development using less well. This well has two horizontal branches, and puts ‘trunk-branch-trunk-branch’ into effect while drilling. The first branch designed horizontal length 150m. The second branch designed horizontal length 150m. This paper introduced the tracing with drilling process of Daqing first fishbone horizontal well, and also described the complex situations and the treatment methods while drilling wellbore trajectory and constructing well and the development effect. Finally some suggestions were put forward about tracing with drilling in fishbone horizontal well.

Future development drilling in Bass Strait will be challenged by small field sizes, thin oil columns and increasing drilling difficulty due to greater hole angle and reach. New drilling technology successfully introduced in the recent Bream, Whiting, Perch and Dolphin developments including Steerable Drilling Systems (SDS), Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) bits and Logging While Drilling (LWD) tools, coupled with the successful use of jackup rigs for miniplatform development, has given Esso the tools and confidence to meet the development challenges of the 'nineties. Bass Strait's first horizontal well has been successfully drilled and completed with further wells planned in the current Bream development. There still remain some areas requiring improvements, including hole cleaning in high angle holes. Improvements in this and other areas will further improve drilling capability.Given the right incentives Bass Strait drilling technology is well positioned for the challenge of oil development in the 'nineties.
