Abstract In this paper a solution to the path following control problem for miniature fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicle (MAV) in the presence of inaccuracy modelling parameters and environmental disturbances is presented. We introduce a two-layered framework to collaborate guidance level with control level. A modified vector fields based path following methodology is proposed in the kinematics phase to track a Dubins path with straight line segments and circle ones. Then a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller based on feedback linearization and gain scheduling techniques is designed such that the MAV can reject nonlinear dynamics, system uncertainties and disturbances by using a robust fuzzy control scheme. Eventually, by giving comparison test with control effort and track error as assessment metrics, both the practicality of the framework and the outperformance of the proposed algorithm are well demonstrated.

This article proposes a novel adaptive super-twisting sliding mode control scheme with a time-delay estimation technique (ASTSMC-TDE) to control the yaw angle of a single ducted-fan unmanned aerial vehicle system. Such systems are highly nonlinear; hence, the proposed control scheme is a combination of several control schemes; super-twisting sliding mode, TDE technique to estimate the nonlinear factors of the system, and an adaptive sliding mode. The tracking error of the ASTSMC-TDE is guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded using Lyapunov stability theory. Moreover, to enhance the versatility and the practical feasibility of the proposed control scheme, a comparison study between the proposed controller and a proportional-integral-derivative controller (PID) is conducted. The comparison is achieved through two different scenarios: a normal mode and an abnormal mode. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to provide an in-depth investigation of the performance of the proposed ASTSMC-TDE control system.

This paper develops a finite-time path following control scheme for an underactuated marine surface vessel (MSV) with external disturbances, model parametric uncertainties, position constraint and input saturation. Initially, based on the time-varying barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), the finite-time line-of-sight (FT-LOS) guidance law is proposed to obtain the desired yaw angle and simultaneously constrain the position error of the underactuated MSV. Furthermore, the finite-time path following constraint controllers are designed to achieve tracking control in finite time. Additionally, considering the model parametric uncertainties and external disturbances, the finite-time disturbance observers are proposed to estimate the compound disturbance. For the sake of avoiding the input saturation and satisfying the requirements of finite-time convergence, the finite-time input saturation compensators were designed. The stability analysis shows that the proposed finite-time path following control scheme can strictly guarantee the constraint requirements of the position, and all error signals of the whole control system can converge into a small neighborhood around zero in finite time. Finally, comparative simulation results show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed finite-time path following control scheme.
