The burgeoning process of internationalization of higher education has greatly transformed university classrooms with the presence of innumerous nationalities. Thus it is imperative that professors are well equipped to teach in such culturally diverse context while sustaining the goals of internationalization. Although a culturally relevant pedagogy has been widely used in many educational settings, including higher education, there is a paucity of studies looking for its pertinence in an internationalized context. Then, based on Gloria Ladson-Billings’ (1995) theoretical framework, this critical phenomenological study depicts the extent to which that approach is also pertinent for informing post-secondary teachers’ work with international students in modern days. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten experienced professors across different faculties at a mid-sized Canadian university. Findings reveal that this pedagogy is highly appropriate to illuminate professors’ practices, but this relevance also points to fundamental and urgent aspects that must be taken into consideration when aiming at a democratic and true internationalized education.

Worldwide, there has been a number of researchers studying how children acquire two or more languages since bilingualism or multilingualism were increasingly prevalent. China, a monolingual culture is a late participant engaged in the field of bilingualism studies. Recent years witnessed a growing number of Chinese parents who attempted to raise their children bilingual by speaking English to them at home, however, relevant research on bilingualism acquisition in China lagged behind. This article reviews existing studies on early child bilingualism acquisition and bilingual parenting, displays language context in China, and explores solutions to difficulties Chinese parents face. Different from their counterparts in culturally diverse context, these Chinese parents were confronted with unique and more challenges: the quality of English they speak to children; the quantity of English input; the monolingual environment in China; and resistance to English by children. Solutions are proposed to tackle these issues respectively.

The study investigated the attitudes and practices of Nigerian students towards the use languages (English and native) in a culturally diverse society as the native languages are endangered because the English language is taking over the world linguistic environment as a lingua franca. Ten students who speak different Nigerian native languages were selected randomly from an international university (pseudonym) in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). A qualitative research method was adopted for the study using multiple sources of data collection, which include unstructured interview, personal stories, field notes and informal chats. The findings indicated that they acquired their native languages from birth at home, while they learn additional languages in their environment. They have positive attitudes towards the native languages, indicated by the value accorded them while English enjoys its official position. It was found out that the native languages were used for solidarity, prayers, identity and heritage preservation, whereas English language pertains the status of official language. In summary, Nigerian students studying in a culturally diverse context aim at preserving their language, culture, and identity by using it in their daily lives while they prefer using English language only for official purposes.
