This study was conducted to determine the growth and flower quality of single-node cutting rose `Versillia' under two different irrigation control methods (time clock and integrated solar radiation). The frequency of irrigation was controlled by time clock and integrated solar radiation of 1.25 and 2.09 and 3.35 MJ·m-2 in aeroponics. Photosynthesis was the highest in the integrated solar radiation of 2.09 MJ·m-2 and 1.25 MJ·m-2 the lowest in the integrated solar radiation of 3.35 MJ·m-2. The growth of single-node cutting rose `Versillia' at 1.25 MJ·m-2 and 2.09 MJ·m-2 was better than 3.35 MJ·m-2 for stem length and fresh weight. Root activities of single-node cutting rose were significantly higher at 2.09 MJ·m-2 and 1.25 MJ·m-2 than those at 3.35 MJ·m-2. The irrigation control method using integrated solar radiation of 1.25-2.09 MJ·m-2 showed a improvement of plant growth and flower quality.

Better understanding of the effects of irrigation frequency and dose on flower production of gerbera plants (Gerbera jamesonii) can lead to optimal water management and crop yield. Measurements of greenhouse microclimate and production and quality characteristics of a gerbera crop were carried out under two irrigation frequency regimens in soilless cultivation in a greenhouse located in Arta, Greece. Irrigation scheduling was based on solar radiation and performed whenever accumulated solar radiation energy outside the greenhouse reached 1650 kJ·m−2 [high irrigation frequency (HIF)] or 3300 kJ·m−2 [low irrigation frequency (LIF)]. The amount of water applied was 0.125 mm and 0.250 mm for HIF and LIF, respectively. Stem fresh weight, length and thickness, and number of harvested gerbera flowers were measured along with crop evapotranspiration, crop leaf area, and greenhouse microclimate variables. Measurements started 8 months after transplanting and lasted 90 days (May to July). Leaf area, fresh weight, harvested cut flowers, and the main quality characteristics of gerbera flowers (stem length and flower diameter) were unaffected by the irrigation frequency. In the framework of the experiment, simple formulas for calculation of leaf area index were developed. Finally, a first approach study of an alternative remote sensing irrigation control method using a reflectance index was made and the results are presented.

Cut snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus L. cvs. Fujinoyuki, Oakland, and Bismarck) were harvested at three different stages and pulsed with silver thiosulfate (STS). Then, the flowers were treated with several preservative solutions to test the effects on vase life and flower quality. Proper storage methods were also investigated. The best harvesting time of snapdragon was when seven to nine florets were opened in a spike. The flowers harvested at this stage had more fresh weight, increased number of opened flowers per spike, and longer vase life than those harvested at earlier stages. Pulsing with 0.2 mM STS for 16 h improved flower quality and prolonged vase life. The preservative solution containing 2% sucrose + 150 ppm 8-hydroxyquinone citrate (HQC) + 25 ppm AgNO3 prolonged vase life. However, this solution caused longer internode between florets and excessive elongation of spike. The preservative solution containing 2% sucrose + 150 ppm HQC + 25 ppm AgNO3 + 50 ppm daminozide improved flower quality by prolonging vase life, reducing the length of internode between florets, and preventing excessive elongation of spike. The flowers held in 50% 7-Up had 2 times prolonged vase life compared to water control. The flowers held in 4% ethyl alcohol also had prolonged vase life and increased fresh weight. Ethylene caused floret abscission and STS pretreatment prevented this floret abscission. Ethylene production in cut snapdragons maintained 2 to 6 nl/g fresh weight per h during vase life. The prolonging storage at low temperature (1C) shortened vase life. The flowers pretreated with STS, and then held in preservative solution during cold storage, had better flower quality and longer vase life than those in plain water.

This study was conducted to understand the effect of different nutrient control method on the growth, cut-flower quality, root activity and fertilizer consumption. Single-node cutting rose `Versillia' was grown in aeroponics and DFT system and was irrigated with the nutrient solution of the Univ. of Seoul (NO3 -N 8.8, NH4 -N 0.67, P 2.0, K 4.8, Ca 4.0, Mg 2.0 me·L-1). Recirculated nutrient solution was managed by five different control method: macro- and micro-element control in aeroponic system (M&M); macroelement control in aeroponic system (M); nutrient solution supplement in aeroponic system (S); electrical conductivity (EC) control in aeroponic system (EC-A); EC control in deep flow technique system (EC-D). The mineral nutrient control method had significantly effected on the cut-flower quality. In the M&M and M, flower length, fresh weight and root activity were higher than those with other mineral nutrients control method. Although EC-A and EC-D could save total amount of fertilizer compared to M&M and M, the growth and quality of the rose with EC control system were lower than those with mineral nutrient control system. Therefore, these result suggest that EC control system is not economic method in a closed hydroponic system.

Third-generation sequencing using nanopores as biosensors has recently emerged as a strategy capable to overcome next-generation sequencing drawbacks and pitfalls. Assessing the quality of the data produced by nanopore sequencing platforms is essential to decide how useful these may be in making biological discoveries. Here, we briefly contextualized NanoR, a quality control method for nanopore sequencing data we developed, in the scenario of preexistent similar tools. We also illustrated 2 quality control pipelines, readily applicable to nanopore sequencing data, respectively, based on NanoR and PyPore, a second quality control method published by our group.

Quality of service (QoS) is an important performance indicator for Web applications and bandwidth is a key factor affecting QoS. Current methods use network protocols or ports to schedule bandwidth, which require tedious manual configurations or modifications of the underlying network. Some applications use dynamic ports and the traditional port-based bandwidth control methods cannot deal with them. A new QoS control method based on local bandwidth scheduling is proposed, which can schedule bandwidth at application level in a user-transparent way and it does not require tedious manual configurations. Experimental results indicate that the new method can effectively improve the QoS for applications, and it can be easily integrated into current Web applications without the need to modify the underlying network.

Supplemental lighting and nitrogen nutrition affected growth, flowering, flower yield, foliar nitrogen content, and flower keeping quality of Rosa hybrida ’Forever Yours.’ Light treatments consisted of ambient light and ambient light supplemented with high pressure sodium lamps at intensities of 105 and 158 μEm−2 sec−1 18 h/day (7.4 and 10.8 klx). Three nitrogen levels, 100, 200, and 400 ppm, were applied with each irrigation. Supplementary light of 105 μEm−2 sec−1 increased yield, stem length, fresh weight, and stem grade but caused decreased foliar N and keeping quality. Lighting at 158 μEm−2 sec−1 increased flower yield, but decreased days to flowering, stem length, fresh weight, foliar N, keeping quality, and stem grade. Nitrogen levels of 100 and 200 ppm were insufficient to maintain foliar N content at optimum levels in lighted roses, but 200 ppm N resulted in better keeping quality compared with 100. Nitrogen alone, however, had little effect on yield and quality. Increasing the nitrogen level to 400 ppm resulted in higher foliar N content in the lighted treatments but failed to have a significant effect on the yield or quality of roses.

A study was conducted to elucidate the effect of different planting systems, videlicet (viz.) flat, ridge, and raised bed system on growth, yield and quality of gladiolus and stock. Corms of ‘Rose Supreme’ and ‘White Prosperity’ gladiolus and seedlings of ‘Cheerful White’, ‘Lucinda Dark Rose Double’ and ‘Lucinda Dark Rose Single’ stock were planted on different planting systems in individual experiments for each species. Gladiolus had similar good quality production irrespective of planting systems with numerical superiority of ridge planting, which produced longer stems with higher stem fresh weight, but delayed corm sprouting by ca. 1 d compared to raised bed or flat planting system. Among cultivars, ‘Rose Supreme’ produced higher number of florets per spike, taller stems with longer spikes, higher fresh weight of stems and higher number of cormels than ‘White Prosperity’. Stock plants grown on flat beds produced stems with greater stem length, leaf area and fresh weight of stems compared to ridge or raised bed planting systems. Plants grown on ridges produced the highest stem diameter, number of leaves per plant, total leaf chlorophyll contents, and number of flowers per spike. ‘Cheerful White’ and ‘Lucinda Dark Rose Double’ performed best by producing good quality stems in shorter period compared to ‘Lucinda Dark Rose Single’. In summary, gladiolus should be grown on ridges, while stock may be planted on flat beds for higher yields of better quality flowers.

Tubers of Sandersonia aurantiaca Hook. were soaked in 1000 mg·L-1 GA3, 20 mg·L-1 uniconazole, 200 mg·L-1 benzyladenine, or water for 2 hours and then sprouted at 12, 18, or 24 °C. The effects of these treatments on flower stem quality were then determined at forcing temperatures of 18, 24, or 30 °C. Stem length increased with sprouting temperature only at a forcing temperature of 18 °C. Floret numbers increased with sprouting temperature at all forcing temperatures, but the effect was greatest at the 18 °C forcing temperature. The 12 °C sprouting treatment reduced floret numbers at all forcing temperatures. Soaking tubers in GA3 increased stem length but drastically reduced floret numbers, while soaking in uniconazole reduced stem length but had no significant effect on floret numbers. Soaking in BA strongly promoted branching, which resulted in large increases (>30%) in floret numbers per stem with little change in stem length. Of the three growth regulators, only BA was effective in improving cut flower stem quality. Chemical names used: gibberellic acid (GA3); (E)-(+)-(S)-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-pent-1-ene-3 -ol (uniconazole); N6-benzylamino purine (benzyladenine; BA).

There are currently various algorithms with mass spectrometry in phosphorylation identification. Some quality control methods have also been proposed. However, a detailed comparative analysis among various methods has not been reported. In the paper, based on the theory of forward-reverse databases searching, we compare current major algorithms in database searching and identification i.e Mascot and Sequest, and compare various aspects and methods of algorithms in site assessment. We propose an effictive quality control method. Our result shows that this method can ensure the quality of identification and identify more phosphorylation sites.
