This study examined the effect of gender as moderating variable on relationship  between market orientation and financial performance. Market orientation reflects the  degree to which firms’ strategic market planning is driven by customer and competitor  intelligence. Data was analyzed using Chow analysis. The results showed that market  orientation has an effect on financial performance either in female or male–owned  micro business. The study also shown that gender had moderating effect on relationship between market orientation and financial performance. Keywords: gender, market orientation, and financial performance.

This study examined the effect of entrepreneurial orientation on profitability in small business mediated by market orientation. Entrepreneurial orientation reflects the degree to which firms’ growth objectives are driven bythe identification and exploitation of untapped market opportunities. Market orientation reflects the degree to which firms’ strategic market planning is driven by customer and competitor intelligence.Data was processed with Structural Equation Modeling using AMOS  program. The results showed that Entre-preneurial orientation has an direct effect onmarket orientation and indirect effect on profitability mediated by market orientation. The results suggest, at least in small firms, entrepreneurial orientation complements market orientation by instilling an opportunistic culture that impacts the firm’s profitability. Keywords:market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, and profitability.

PurposeThe purpose of this article is to study the moderating effect of absorptive capacity, defined as the set of organizational routines and processes through which companies acquire, assimilate, transform and exploit knowledge to produce a dynamic organizational capacity (Zahra and George, 2002), in three strategic orientations: market orientation; technology orientation and entrepreneurial orientation and their positive relationship in the performance of the medium and large Mexican manufacturing firms. Likewise, it is determined whether these three combined SOs influence firm performance.Design/methodology/approachThe data was collected from 171 medium and large-sized Mexican manufacturing firms. The proposed hypotheses are tested using partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).FindingsDespite the importance of knowledge for the development of firms, the results indicate that the moderating effect of absorptive capacity is only present in the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance. That is, firms cannot take advantage of knowledge simultaneously between the three strategic orientations. For their part, market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation exert a positive influence on firm performance.Practical implicationsThe main practical implication for the manufacturing industry is that they must develop mechanisms to detect what kind of knowledge affects each strategic orientation, in this way it can make the absorptive capacity influence the relationships between SO and FP.Originality/valueThe main contribution consists of studying the moderating effect of the absorptive capacity on the relationship between three strategic orientations and firm performance, and not concentrating solely on the simultaneous use of these strategies as is commonly done.

Purpose The importance of architectural marketing capabilities (i.e. marketing planning and implementation) in exporting ventures has been recognised. However, extant literature has not taken into account the explicit roles and required synergy between the exporter and their foreign distributor in delivering these capabilities. Drawing from the resource-based theory, the purpose of this paper is to examine the complementarity of distributor implementation capability and market orientation with exporter planning capability. Design/methodology/approach The study was carried out using a survey. Data were collected from 147 Greek exporters who replied to our questionnaire and the hypotheses were tested using the full information maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Findings The results support the hypotheses about the importance of exporter planning capability on financial performance and the complementary role of distributor market orientation. Further, the authors find that the distributor’s implementation capability partially mediates the impact of the exporter’s planning capability on financial performance. Originality/value This study contributes to a better understanding about the complementarity of exporter and distributor capabilities. It demonstrates the crucial role of the distributor in the deployment of architectural capabilities for the export venture: the distributor’s market orientation and implementation capability have the final say in achieving higher levels of export performance.
