Introduction. Multistrain probiotics often include biocompatible strains, which leads to suppression of microbial viability and, as a result, decreases their efficacy. Therefore, new probiotics should be based on well-matched strains with no antagonism. Study objects and methods. The research featured strains of lactic and propionic acid bacteria from the VNIIPBT collection. The method of direct co-cultivation on dense medium (drop technique) was used to assess the biocompatibility of lactic acid bacteria. Antagonism was detected visually based on signs of suppression after 24 and 48 h after the onset of incubation. Antagonism of the consortia was assessed by the Romanovich method. Results and discussion. The screening resulted in seven promising strains with the specific growth rate of 0.32–0.84 h–1 and the maximum population density ≤ 2.2 billion CFU/cm3. A set of experiments on the strain adaptation mechanisms revealed combinations of strains with the lowest antagonism and competition for the substrate. The research resulted in a four-component consortium of Lactobacillus plantarum 314/8, Lactobacillus helveticus R0052/6, Enterococcus faecium B-2240D, and Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii 103/27. The optimal ratio was the one where the cultures were present in equal proportions. The study also described the biosynthetic properties of the consortium and the ratio of the strains in its composition. The consortium demonstrated a balanced growth, good strain compatibility, and absence of antagonism. The cultivation mode was tested anaerobically on milk whey at 37°C for 24 h (strain ratio = 1:1:1:1). Conclusion. The new consortium proved suitable for industrial production of feed probiotics.

Lactobacillus helveticus and Propionibacterium acidipropionici were grown in pure and mixed cultures in a complex medium to assess the associative interaction. The specific growth rates, substrate consumption coefficient, substrate utilization and product formation rates were determined in each case. Propionibacterium acidipropionici utilized glucose preferably when it grew in a medium containing a mixture of glucose and lactate. Its growth rate was higher on glucose than on lactate in pure culture. However, lactic acid was the substrate utilized by propionibacteria in the associative growth. The fast pH reduction produced by the growth of lactobacilli and the slow lactate utilization by propionibacteria in mixed culture determined the inhibition of propionic acid bacteria in associative growth.

Whey obtained from milk fermented by the Lactobacillus helveticus CM4 strain (LHMW) has been shown to improve skin barrier function and increase skin-moisturizing factors. In this study, we investigated the effects of LHMW on melanin production to explore the additional impacts of LHMW on the skin. We treated mouse B16 melanoma cells with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) alone or simultaneously with LHMW and measured the amount of melanin. The amount of melanin in B16 cells treated with α-MSH significantly increased by 2-fold compared with that in control cells, and tyrosinase activity was also elevated. Moreover, treatment with LHMW significantly suppressed the increase in melanin content and elevation of tyrosinase activity due to α-MSH. LHMW also suppressed the α-MSH-induced increased expression of tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP1), and dopachrome tautomerase (DCT) at the protein and mRNA levels. Furthermore, the mRNA and protein microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) expression levels were significantly increased with treatment with α-MSH alone, which were also suppressed by LHMW addition. LHMW suppression of melanin production is suggested to involve inhibition of the expression of the tyrosinase gene family by lowering the MITF expression level. LHMW may have promise as a material for cosmetics with expected clinical application in humans.

Abstract. This project compared the relative performance of professional dancers and nondancers on the Music Apperception Test (MAT; van den Daele, 2014 ), then compared dancers’ performance on the MAT with that on the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Murray, 1943 ). The MAT asks respondents to “tell a story to the music” in compositions written to represent basic emotions. Dancers had significantly shorter response latency and were more fluent in storytelling than a comparison group matched for gender and age. Criterion-based evaluation of dancers’ narratives found narrative emotion consistent with music written to portray the emotion, with the majority integrating movement, sensation, and imagery. Approximately half the dancers were significantly more fluent on the MAT than the TAT, while the other half were significantly more fluent on the TAT than the MAT. Dancers who were more fluent on the MAT had a higher proportion of narratives that integrated movement and imagery compared with those more fluent on the TAT. The results were interpreted as consistent with differences observed in neurological studies of auditory and visual processing, educational studies of modality preference, and the cognitive style literature. The MAT provides an assessment tool to complement visually based performance tests in personality appraisal.

For scholars, the internet provides a space to study diverse groups of people across the world and can be a useful way to bypass physical gender segregation and travel constraints. Despite the potential for new insights into people’s everyday life and increased attention from scholars, there is no standard set of ethics for conducting virtual ethnography on visually based platforms, like YouTube and Instagram. While publicly accessible social media posts are often understood to be a part of the public domain and thus do not require a researcher to obtain a user’s consent before publishing data, caution must be taken when studying members of a vulnerable community, especially those who have a history of surveillance, like African-American Muslims. Using a womanist approach, the author provides recommendations for studying vulnerable religious groups online, based on a case study of a YouTube channel, Muslimah2Muslimah, operated by two African-American Muslim women. The article provides an important contribution to the field of media studies because the author discusses a “dead” online community, where users no longer comment on the videos and do not maintain their own profiles, making obtaining consent difficult and the potential risks of revealing information to an unknown community hard to gauge.
