ABSTRACT Objectives: to evaluate the effect of a training program on the administration of intravenous drugs in pediatric patients on the observed and self-reported behavior of the nursing team. Methods: evaluation study carried out with 38 professionals during three phases: Assessment of the behavior observed in the actions performed before training; Training implementation; and Assessment of observed and self-reported behaviors (immediately and six months after training). Results: in the observed behavior, there was an improvement in six (6/12) hand hygiene actions; five (5/14) pertaining to environment Organization, selection, and preparation of materials; and in seven (7/10) referring to the Orientation of the procedure, administration and monitoring of the patient’s reactions. In self-reported behavior, there was an improvement in two (2/8) actions. Conclusions: the training resulted in an improvement in the actions of nursing professionals related to the administration of intravenous medications, both in observed and in self-reported behavior.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the in-service training experience of perioperative nurses from the SickKids-Ethiopia Paediatrics Perioperative Nursing Training Program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study emphasizes specifically how nurses applied the knowledge and skills gained from the Paediatrics Perioperative Nursing Training program in their subsequent practice and consider the situational factors that facilitated or hindered implementing these new knowledge and skills.METHODS: The first author led qualitative in-depth interviews with nine perioperative nurses who participated in training in September 2016, and systematically developed descriptive codes and themes to analyze the data.RESULTS: The authors found that participants experienced improved knowledge, skills, confidence, and job retention related to perioperative nursing practice after participating in Paediatrics Perioperative Nursing Training. Participants also stressed key challenges including lack of access to ongoing perioperative inservice training and problematic staffing policies that impact perioperative nurses’ ability to fully utilize and share new knowledge gained during CPD training.CONCLUSION: The findings highlighted the value of specialized perioperative CPD training for Ethiopian nurses, yet also pointed to multidimensional challenges for knowledge translation and sustainability of best practices. The authors offer recommendations for individual and institutional strategies to address some of them.

ABSTRACT Objective: To verify the effectiveness of a nursing training program in the area of children’s hearing health using interactive tele-education. Methods: Interrupted time series with non-random control group pre-test/ post-test. A cohort of 41 nurses, with no previous formal training in hearing health. A “Children’s Hearing Health” Cybertutor was employed. The effectiveness of the nursing training was verified by comparing pre- versus post-training performance and by analyzing responses to an evaluation questionnaire. Results: Following training, the performance was significantly better in all domains assessed and in the total score. The evaluation questionnaire demonstrated that the Cybertutor was well accepted and the performance revealed in the pre-training phase demonstrated the need for children´s hearing health training. Conclusion: The effectiveness of the nursing training program in the area of Children’s Hearing Health using interactive tele-education could be proven, since there was an improvement in performance in all domains evaluated.

Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) wound dressing is increasingly used to assist closure in various wounds ranging from simple finger pulp defect to complex wounds such as laparostomy or infected sternotomy. The traditional application of direct vacuum therapy can cause discomfort and put the patient at risk of injuring the affected area while mobilising. We describe a novel technique of applying VAC therapy indirectly which is much more comfortable and convenient for the patient while mobilising.
