A new combination of silica fibres, highly transparent in the ultraviolet (UV) and showing long term stability, combined with a teflon-coated liquid-core waveguide (LCW) is presented for remote sensing in the deep UV, for monitoring one of the major pollutants, nitrates, in water, but with potentially wider applicability. The arrangement exhibits low spectral loss in the range between wavelengths of 200 nm and 400 nm and can be used for analytical investigations to determine small concentrations of such impurities in water. The operation of the optical system to achieve guidance of UV light below a wavelength of 250 nm for fibre optic sensors is discussed. With an optical pathlength of 203 mm, nitrate concentrations as low as 22 μg/l could be detected.

A nanostructured plasmonic photocatalyst, silver/silver thiocyanate (Ag@AgSCN), has been prepared by a simple precipitation method followed by UV-light-induced reduction. The ratio of Ag to silver thiocyanate (AgSCN) can be controlled by simply adjusting the photo-induced reduction time. The formation mechanism of the product was investigated based on the time-dependent experiments. Further experiments indicated that the prepared Ag@AgSCN nanostructures with an atomic ratio of Ag/AgSCN = 0.0463 exhibited high photocatalytic activity and long-term stability for the degradation of oxytetracycline (84%) under visible-light irradiation. In addition to the microstructure and high specific surface area, the enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly caused by the surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles, and the high stability of AgSCN resulted in the long-term stability of the photocatalyst product.

The newly-proposed Lilium leichtlinii subsp. maximowiczii (Maxim.) J.Compton recognises the wide distribution of Maximowicz’s lily and provides long-term stability of the name. Lectotypes are designated for the names Lilium leichtlinii Hook.f., L. maximowiczii Regel, L. maximowiczii var. tigrinum Regel, L. pseudotigrinum Carrière and L. tigrinum var. lishmannii T.Moore.

It is shown that N -confused porphyrins exhibit tautomerism not only in organic solvents, as already reported, but also after incorporation in dry/humid Nafion films. This allows the development of a new fiber-optic humidity sensor which exhibits long-term stability and a linear response over the humidity range 0 to at least 4000 ppm.
