In recent years, as the number of reservoir embankments constructed has increased, embankment failures due to cracks in aging conduits have also increased. In this study, a crack in a conduit was modeled based on the current conduit design model, and the risk of internal erosion was analyzed using a large-scale model test and three-dimensional deformation–seepage analysis. The results show that when cracks existed in the conduit, soil erosion and cavitation occurred near the crack area, which made the conduit extremely vulnerable to internal erosion. Herein, a model is proposed that can reduce internal erosion by applying a layer of sand and geotextiles on the upper part of the conduit located close to the downstream slope. In the proposed model, only partial erosion occurred inside the conduit, and no cavitation appeared near the crack in the conduit. The results suggest that internal erosion can be suppressed when the water pressure acting intensively on the crack in the conduit is dispersed by the drainage layer. To validate these results, the pore water pressure, seepage line, and hydraulic gradient were investigated to confirm the erosion phenomenon and reinforcement effect.

With the saturated - unsaturated seepage theory, Hualianshu landslide is seepage numerical simulated by the finite element method .The changes of Hualianshu landslide seepage are subject to the impact of rainfall and reservoir water level's changes.The formation and variation of the slope seepage field under rainfall infiltration have been come to, providing a basis for analysis of slope stability and landslide prediction.

The study is conducted for the 3-D seepage field analysis and the seepage control measurements optimization of a hydropower project, which is located in Sichuan Province, China. The seepage control measurements are introduced in this paper. An equivalent method is adopted to simulate drainage holes and the approach of determining equivalent permeability coefficient is presented. The 3-D seepage field with seepage control system is analyzed comprehensively by the water head contours, uplift on the dam foundation, and so on. The necessities of setting the grouting curtain and the drainage holes are discussed respectively. Further the optimal design of the grouting curting and drainage holes of the dam foundation is studied. The results show that special attention should be paid to ensure the well-operation of the seepage control system and the optimization of decreasing the depth of the drainage curtains and grouting curtains properly can be considered.

Three-dimensional stochastic simulation was performed to investigate the complexity of the seepage field of an embankment. Three-dimensional anisotropic heterogeneous steady state random seepage finite element model was developed. The material input data were derived from a statistical analysis of strata soil characteristics and geological columns. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to validate the hypothesis that the Gaussian probability distribution is applicable to the random permeability tensors. A stochastic boundary condition, the random variation of upstream and downstream water level, was taken into account in the three-dimensional finite element modelling. Furthermore, the functions of sheet-pile breakwater and catchwater were also incorporated as turbulent sources. This case, together with the variability of soil permeability, has been analyzed to investigate their influence on the hydraulic potential distributed and the random evolution of stochastic seepage field. Results from stochastic analyses have also been compared against those of deterministic analyses. The insights gained in this study suggest it is necessary, feasible, and practical to employ stochastic studies in seepage field problems. The method provides a more comprehensive stochastic algorithm than conventional ones to characterize and analyze three-dimensional random seepage field problems.
