One approaching a thing from a distance may perceive it as existent, then as a substance, then as a tree and, finally, as a fig tree. Thus, the same fig tree can be the object of all these different perceptions. This shows, Udayana argues, that difference in cognitive states does not necessarily prove that their objects are different. This argument is in response to the Buddhist claim that since perceptual cognitive states and non-perceptual cognitive states are different, their respective objects are also different; unique particulars (svalakSaNa) that alone are real, are grasped in perception; general features (saamaanyalakSaNa) that are not real are grasped in non-perceptual cognitive states. The Buddhist objects: when the same thing appears to be the object of different cognitive states, only that cognitive state which leads to useful result is reliable. Udayana replies: More than one cognitive state in the above situation may lead to useful result; it is not justified to accept only one of them as reliable and reject the others. The Buddhist objects again: perceptual awareness is direct but non-perceptual awareness is indirect: hence their objects are different. Udayana replies: The same thing may be perceived when there is sensory connection with it and then inferred from an invariably connected sign when there is no sensory connection. Thus, the same thing may be the object of both direct and indirect cognitive states depending on different causal conditions.

Arachnids (Chelicerata: Arachnida) were collected in the Ndumo Game Reserve (Maputaland, South Africa) during 11 collecting trips in the period 2000–2006. Sampling was undertaken by various methods in eight broad habitat types: Acacia tortilis savanna; Acacia xanthophloea (fever tree) forests; deciduous broadleaf woodland; Ficus (wild fig tree) forests; floodplain vegetation; riparian forest; sand forest; and subtropical bush. In total, 457 species of arachnids were collected, representing six orders, 59 families and 240 determined genera. The most diverse order was the Araneae (46 families, 431 spp.), followed by the Pseudoscorpiones (6 families, 12 spp.), Scorpiones (3 families, 8 spp.), Opiliones (2 families, 3 spp.), Solifugae (1 family, 2 spp.) and Amblypygi (a single species). The most diverse families all belonged to the Araneae: Salticidae (82 spp.), Thomisidae (56 spp.) and Araneidae (38 spp.). The spider diversity is the highest recorded from any protected area in South Africa so far, and represents approximately 22 % of the country’s spider fauna. The habitat and guild associations of each species are provided.

The study was developed in the Integrated Agroecological System area, in Seropédica (RJ, Brazil) between June  2011 and May  2012. The applied fertilizer formulations were: Formulation 1, 100% of nitrogen dose recommended for fig tree supplied by fertilizing with castor bean cake (CB); Formulation 2, 50% of nitrogen dose supplied by DFW application and 50% of nitrogen dose supplied by CB; Formulation 3, 75% of nitrogen dose supplied by DFW application and 25% of nitrogen dose from CB; Formulation 4, 100% of nitrogen dose supplied by DFW application.Data were submitted to analysis of variance and the averages were compared by Tukey’s test at 10% probability. The results demonstrated that branches length, number of leaves per branch, number of fruits, production and yield were lower in plants submitted to Formulation 4. Contamination of fruits by thermotolerant coliforms or Salmonellasp did not occur after DFW use as fertilizer. The results showed that the use of DFW in fig tree cultivation was sufficient to provide the nutritional needs of plants, as regards macronutrients and Fe.   Keywords: fertirrigation, environmental impact, final disposal of effluents and crop nutrition.     SILVA, J.B. EFEITOS DO USO DE ÁGUA RESIDUÁRIA DE BOVINOCULTURANO CULTIVO DA FIGUEIRA (FICUS CARICA L.)         2 RESUMO   Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os efeitos do uso da água residuária de bovinocultura de leite (ARB) no crescimento, produção, padrão fitossanitário dos frutos e na concentração de nutrientes nas folhas da figueira. As formulações de adubação aplicadas foram: Adubação 1 - 100% da dose de nitrogênio fornecida pela adubação com torta de mamona (TM); Adubação 2 - 50% da dose de nitrogênio comaplicação de ARB e 50% com TM; Adubação 3 - 75% da dose de nitrogênio com aplicação de ARB e os outros 25% da dose com TM; Adubação 4 - 100% da dose de nitrogênio com aplicação da ARB. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas utilizando-se o Teste de Tukey a 10% de probabilidade. Diante dos resultados verificou-se que comprimento dos ramos, o número de folhas por ramos, o número de frutos, a produção e a produtividade foram menores nas plantas submetidas à Adubação4. Não ocorreu contaminação dos frutos por coliformes termotolerantes e Salmonella sp. Diante dos resultados concluiu-se que o uso de ARB no cultivo da figueira não proporciona deficiência nutricional às plantas no que se refere aos macronutrientes (N, Ca, Mg, K e P).   Palavras-chave: fertirrigação, impacto ambiental, disposição final de efluentes, nutrição vegetal.

The Slavonic version of the homily dedicated to The (Cursed) Fig-Tree and the Parable of the Vineyard by John Damascene has not been so far object of an archeographic-textological study. The present study gives the initial observations on the reception of that Byzantine work in Mediaeval Slavonic Literature. The work centred mainly on the South Slavonic manuscript tradition, while the East Slavonic manuscript tradition represented by the text from the well-known Uspensky Miscellany was used as a starting point and as a basis for comparison during the analysis. The study showed that in Mediaeval Slavonic Literature the homily dedicated to The (Cursed) Fig-Tree and the Parable of the Vineyard by John Damascene has been disseminated through three different Slavonic translations, one redaction, and one contaminated version.
