It is well known that austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron shows good tensile and elongation. And, retained austenite include in the austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron structure was known to effect for the mechanical properties when TRIP was occurred. On the other hand, fineness and homogeneity of the structure are considered to influence as a factor to improve mechanical property. In this study, the mechanical properties of spherical graphite cast iron was evaluated that it treatmented fineness prior-structure and austenitized at (α + γ) range followed by isothermal treatment at bainitic transformation temperature range. Compared the heat treatment of this study and typical austempering treatment, the mechanical properties with good balance of strength and ductility were obtained in the heat treatment of this study. But, retained austenite that it determined by x-ray diffraction was slightly changed before and after the tensile test. Therfore, it was considered that not TRIP but complex phase effect on mechanical properties.

The influence of the austempering temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) was investigated. ADI is nodular graphite cast iron, which owing to higher strength and elongation, exceeds mechanical properties of conventional spheroidal graphite cast iron. Such a combination of properties is achieved by the heat treatment through austenitization, followed by austempering at different temperatures. The austenitization conditions were the same for all the samples: temperature 890 °C, duration 30 min, and quenching in a salt bath. The main focus of this research was on the influence of the austempering temperatures (270 °C, 300 °C, and 330 °C) on the microstructure evolution, elongation, toughness, and fatigue resistance of ADI modified by certain amounts of Ni, Cu, and Mo. The Vickers and Rockwell hardness decreased from 535.7 to 405.3 HV/1 (55.7 to 44.5 HRC) as the austempering temperature increased. Optical images showed the formation of graphite nodules and a matrix composed of ausferrite; the presence of these phases was confirmed by an XRD diffraction pattern. A fracture surface analysis revealed several types of the mechanisms: cleavage ductile, transgranular, and ductile dimple fracture. The stress-controlled mechanical fatigue experiments revealed that a 330 °C austempering temperature ensures the highest fatigue life of ADI.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron is a material with a wide range of uses such as in automobile parts. By applying active screen plasma nitriding (ASPN) treatment, the use of spheroidal graphite cast iron is expanded, and it can be expected to be used under special load conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of ASPN treatment on the mechanical properties of spheroidal graphite cast iron. With ASPN treatment, a nitride layer was formed on the sample surface and a diffusion layer was formed further inside the nitride layer. The thickness of nitride layer increased as the treatment temperature increased. The hardness was improved by ASPN treatment. The abrasion resistance was improved by ASPN treatment, and longer treatment time resulted in higher abrasion resistance. The fatigue strength was improved by ASPN treatment, and longer treatment time resulted in higher fatigue strength. ASPN treatment also improved the corrosion resistance.
