Mathematical problems that they must solve. This is because mathematical representation is a form of expression of ideas displayed by students in various forms in certain situations in an effort to find solutions to the problems faced. The lack of students' understanding of the questions given is most likely due to students who are not able to use mathematical representation correctly. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach that aims to describe the mathematical representation of junior high school students, especially students with high ability in solving math problems. The subject of this research is one of the eighth grade students of SMP 10 November Sidoarjo selected based on a mathematical ability test. The results of the data description show that in solving problems, students with high mathematical abilities tend to use visual representations, make mathematical equations or mathematical expressions, and answer problems by using written words or text with the results of solving problems mostly correct.

Mathematical representation is the ability to express ideas or definitions raised by the students when solving problems. At now, most students have difficulties in the ability of mathematical representation. The difficulty of this mathematical representation needs to be analyze the causes, including analysis based on gender differences. This type of research is a qualitative study which aims to systematically describe the ability of mathematical representation based on gender differences. The subjects of the study was grade IX students at SMP Negeri 4 in Natar, South Lampung. Research subjects numbered 31 people, consisti of 16 boys and 15 girls. Data was collected through tests and observations, and data were analyze descriptively based on 3 indicator levels, namely visual representations, mathematical expressions or similarty, and written words or texts. The results showed that there were differences in representation when viewed regarding gender, where girls make more representation than boys.

Abstract Students should be encouraged to achieve high order thinking skills, in which one of the ways to build the thinking skills is through solving mathematical problems. This study aimed to observe the effectiveness of a problem-based learning method and its effect on students’ perseverance in solving mathematical problems. The subjects of this research were science students at a Senior High School (SMAN) 2 Surabaya, Indonesia, selected with clustered random sampling. The research was conducted with an experimental design, and the problem-based learning method was applied in a Science 1 Class (experiment class), while a Science 4 Class was taught by following the conventional learning method designed by the teacher (control class), where the learning process was centered on the teacher and focused on the discipline. The instruments used in this research were the learning set for both learning methods, initial and final problem sets. The research results showed that the application of problem-based learning methods resulted in better learning outcomes. Moreover, the analysis of covariance showed that the application of a problem-based learning method is effective to develop students’ perseverance in solving mathematical problems.

Abstract Mathematical problems that they must solve.
