Abstract: This study was conceptualized to identify how Filipino school principals designed a wellness program as basis for general guidelines for the design of teachers’ wellness program. The researchers used descriptive method, particularly case study method of research. Five public elementary school principals with implemented teachers' wellness programs were chosen as the participants of the study. Instruments used to gather data were prepared by the researchers and has been validated by the experts in the field. Participants were asked to answer questions through interviews. From the results of the interview different strategies emerged and were considered to make the program more effective and successful to the participants such as needs assessments, stakeholders’ involvement, listening to the stakeholders, stakeholders’ consultations, establishment of committee and gathering of resources. As to the outcome of the program, happiness, a healthy lifestyle, a positive attitude, professional growth, and dimensions of wellness should be considered. Stakeholders’ involvement and their willingness make the program possible, successful and well-managed. Their expertise, time and commitment strengthen the program as well as the camaraderie of the stakeholders. The leadership style of the principals also plays a big role to make the program properly designed, implemented and managed. To help promote a culture of innovation, the Ministry of Education andthe Ministry of Science, Technology, and Telecommunication of Costa Rica estab-lished a national executive decree requiring all public schools in the country partic-ipate in the National Program of Science and Technology Fairs (NPSTF). This casestudy examines the role of five elementary school principals in Costa Rica in implementing and preparing their schools for the NPSTF initiative. Principals played threesignificant roles: the motivator of teachers and students; acquirer of NPSTF resources;and the organizer of NPSTF committees and coalitions to help train and finance theinitiative. It is recommended the Ministry of Education establish a budget solely ded-icated to support infrastructure and professional development for NPSTF while aligning goals with all stakeholders.

This Australian case study explored the implementation of strategies to support the development of a positive school culture among whole school staff. A participatory action research approach was used to involve leadership staff in the development of a mixed method assessment of the school organisation. Baseline data from the School Organisational Health Questionnaire ( n = 28) and qualitative data from focus groups ( n = 15) were collected and presented to the leadership team who identified four foci for the study: appraisal and recognition, participative decision-making, professional growth and supportive leadership. After a range of interventions, findings from both post-test surveys ( n = 22) and qualitative data ( n = 30) suggested a change in leadership style was a key factor of school cultural change across all factors. The case study highlights a number of visible strategies that were employed to increase morale and improve staff wellbeing.

Living a healthy lifestyle is a constant choice. As a life goal, it is a decision to uphold every moment and is best achieved with support of others. There are a multitude of workplace wellness and healthy lifestyle programs that address achieving and maintaining the goal of normal weight over a lifetime. Fewer such evidence based programs exist and a goal of our hospital is to create a comprehensive wellness program based on evidence. In the context of normal weight maintenance in nurses, this article discusses selected challenges for healthy eating and exercise and nurse fitness programs based on the author and her colleagues experiences with specific obesity research interventions, such as Nurses Living FitTM, that we designed and offered. An exemplar provides details about our wellness programs, which included three annual walk or run events, one full day conference, and a series of multiple exercise, yoga, and nutrition sessions. Our goal was to expose nurses to healthier lifestyle aspects with a primary focus on the optimal balance of exercise and nutrition. Over the years of research, events, and programs, greater than 1,000 people have participated. The conclusion includes implications for education and practice in the hope that our experiences may motive nurses to design exercise and nutrition programs to promote normal weight maintenance in nurses.

by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and professional growth. The primary purpose in the conduct of the study was to determine whether leadership practices of school heads of Region XI can be predicted by their efficacy and professionalism. Quantitative non-experimental research designed was employed using multiple regression analysis involving three hundred nine-one (391) teacher- respondents selected at random assessing their respective school heads from the different elementary schools in Region XI. Further, results showed that professionalism and efficacy significantly predict the school heads’ leadership practices. Therefore, Professionalism significantly influences leadership practices of school heads. Efficacy significantly influences leadership practices of school heads and professionalism and efficacy are significant predictors of leadership practices of school heads. Hence, it was recommended that DepEd officials should raise the level of professionalism and efficacy of public elementary school principals in order to raise their levels of leadership practices. This can be done through trainings and effective monitoring and evaluation system to enhance the performance of the school heads in a global setting. Keywords: Education, professionalism, leadership practices, quantitative non-experimentalstudy, regression analysis, Philippines

While worksite wellness programs are generally designed to help employees realize better overall health, some employees may not see them in that light. The current study sought to better understand why employees refuse to participate in a new employer-sponsored wellness program. This study also investigated how participation in the program is related to employees’ self-perceived health, efficacy to be healthier and their perceptions toward their organization providing useful resources to engage in a healthy lifestyle. A survey of more than 1,500 employees at a large Midwest organization was conducted after their annual open-enrollment period. Open-ended responses from participants refusing to participate in the wellness program ( n = 297) indicated privacy considerations as their primary concern. They also thought participation would take too much time, conceptually thought the program was unfair or not useful and felt they were already healthy and not in need of the program. Both participants and nonparticipants had no differences in self-perceived overall health. However, participants had greater self-efficacy, and perceptions that their employer offered useful resources to engage in a healthy lifestyle, than nonparticipants. Recommendations for communicating new wellness programs to employees are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of emotional intelligence (EI) and achievement motivation (AM) on elementary school principals’ leadership styles. This study investigates the contribution of EI and AM on the two major leadership categories: the task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a quantitative study with the implementation of correlation and hierarchical regression analysis. The surveys (i.e. EI scale, AM scale, leadership style questionnaire) were sent randomly to 280 elementary school principals in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and 90 of them completed the survey (mostly male=77.78 percent). Findings Principals’ EI significantly predicted both task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership. In contrast, the principals’ AM yielded non-significant results in predicting both task-oriented and relationship-oriented leadership style. The results also suggested that the effect of EI on two major leadership styles (i.e. task- and relationship-orientation) outperformed the leader’s AM. Research limitations/implications This study did not consider the principals’ performance in the analysis. Future studies should also address this issue by considering leadership performance as well as different culture and context. On the other hand, the authors developed new measures rather than using preexisting measures. Although the measures have been constructed according to the scale construction principles and reached an acceptable standard, future research should advance the psychometric property of the scales. Originality/value This study discusses the effect of EI and AM on task- and relationship-orientation leadership. In addition, this study has also brought a new insight into understanding leadership styles in collective culture such as Indonesia.

Discussed in this paper are experiences with leadership and power from the points of view of four women elementary school principals and the teachers with whom they work. Focused on the concepts of leadership, communication, decisionmaking, and conflict resolution, data were collected through semi-structured and unstructured interviews with principals, and surveys and structured interviews with teachers. Interview data were analyzed by transcription to determine emergent themes; survey data were analyzed statistically. Findings included descriptions of principals’ uses of facilitative power from their self reports and the reports of those teachers with whom they worked. The paper also provides examples of power as both a multi-dimensional and multi-directional concept.
