AbstractA series of novel monomethylated salts derived from linear benzobisthiazole was prepared. The push-pull attributes of these new compounds are represented by a quaternised azolium cycle as the acceptor part at one end of the structure and the dialkylamino- or diarylamino-substituted benzene ring as the donor part at the opposite end. Both moieties are connected by a conjugated linker consisting of one or two double bonds. Such dipolar structures are promising candidates for non-linear optical materials. The quantum-chemical indices describing linear and non-linear optical properties were obtained from semi-empirical calculations. The relationships between the chemical structure and non-linear optical properties of the cations studied were obtained. Effective conjugation was confirmed by measuring the optical properties in the UV-VIS region.

The title compound, C19H18NO2 +·C6H4ClO3S−, exhibits non-linear optical properties. The cation is almost planar and the benzene ring of the anion makes dihedral angles of 48.97 (6) and 51.63 (7)° with the mean planes through the quinolinium system and the benzene ring of the cation, respectively. The anions are linked by C—H...O interactions, forming a chain along the a axis, while the cations are stacked along the a axis. The anionic chains and the cationic stacks are alternately arranged.

The valence electronic properties of some unsubstituted and peripherally substituted oxo-titanium phthalocyanines are reported. Semiempirical quantum chemical calculations show that the nature of peripheral substituents has a strong bearing on the valence electronic properties, including the state dipole moments and absorption wavelength. The non-linear optical response was measured around the the Q-band resonance. The effect of different substituents and substitution patterns on the non-linear behaviour of the samples was determined. The combined results suggest that tuning of electronic and optical properties is effectively achieved by functionalization of the edges of the conjugated ring.

AbstractMeasurements on the reverse saturable absorption (RSA) properties of some polyene dyes are presented. For a series of linear dyes, a correlation is observed between the symmetry of a molecule and its ability to exhibit RSA. To our knowledge, this is the first structure-RSA relationship discovered to date.Certain of these materials have been studied with semi-empirical quantum chemical techniques and the observed structure-RSA relationship is rationalised in terms of the calculated electronic structures. In this paper, we report primarily on some studies we have carried out on the linear dye systems.

New tricyanovinyl- derivatives 1 of 1-(alkyl)aryl-2-(2´-thienyl)pyrroles 2 have been synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 display dramatic reductions in both their optical and electrochemical band gaps in comparison to thienylpyrroles 2. The solvatochomic behavior of tricyanovinyl- derivatives 1 was investigated in a variety of solvents. In agreement with the solvatochromic and the electrochemical studies for push-pull derivatives 1 the new compounds prepared, can find application for manufacturing new materials with notable non-linear optical properties.

AbstractThe requirement for materials which exhibit good second and third order non-linear optical properties and also for materials which could sense metals in trace quantities has kindled renewed investigations. Organometallics and coordination compounds show a lot of promise as new NLO materials combining the variety of organic moieties with the strength and variable oxidation states of metals. Especially ligands which selectively detect industrial pollutants like Cd and biologically significant metals like Zn are necessary. In the current work the ligand 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-di(carboxaldehyde phenylhydrazone) (L) and its Ni2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Ir3+ complexes were synthesized. These were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, MS and CHN microanalysis techniques. The complexes were shown to have the formula [ML]2+. The second and third order NLO of the ligand and its complexes were recorded These new compounds were found to have same order of third order nonlinear optical susceptibility as that of CS2 and their second hyperpolarizability was an order of magnitude greater than that of C60. Furthermore the ligand also displays selective luminescence sensing of metals ions Fe2+ and Ir3+ even in the presence of other metal ions.
