Abstract Health issues for elderly people may lead to different injuries obtained during simple activities of daily living. Potentially the most dangerous are unintentional falls that may be critical or even lethal to some patients due to the heavy injury risk. In the project “Wireless Sensor Systems in Telecare Application for Elderly People”, we have developed a robust fall detection algorithm for a wearable wireless sensor. To optimise the algorithm for hardware performance and test it in field, we have designed an accelerometer based wireless fall detector. Our main considerations were: a) functionality – so that the algorithm can be applied to the chosen hardware, and b) power efficiency – so that it can run for a very long time. We have picked and tested the parts, built a prototype, optimised the firmware for lowest consumption, tested the performance and measured the consumption parameters. In this paper, we discuss our design choices and present the results of our work.

Now a days, most of the elderly person live in home alone. In their day to day living, some activities likely to have some accidents, such as fall. If the fall is unobserved for a longer period, it may lead to severe health trauma or even leads to death. According to the insights announced in National Safety Council, they are the subsequent driving reason for unexpected passing assessing 424000 passing worldwide. The objective of this paper is to develop a device that detects the fall event of the elderly person and intimate to the family members about the event. A call will be made automatically to the contact number provided in the fall detector application installed in the smart phone. It can accompany elderly people both indoors and outdoors in contrast to ambient devices. Computation of this method is simple and it is possible to implement in small size, so it can be easily carried by the elderly people. It can be afforded by

Falls are one of the most common causes of accidental injury: approximately, 37.3 million falls requiring medical intervention occur each year. Fall-related injuries may cause disabilities, and in some extreme cases, premature death among older adults, which has a significant impact on health and social care services. In recent years, information and communication technologies (ICT) have helped enhance the autonomy and quality of life of elderly people, and significantly reduced the costs associated with elderly care. We designed and developed an integrated fall detection and prevention ICT service for elderly people, which was based on two wearable smart sensors, called, respectively, WIMU fall detector and WIMU data-logger (Wearable Inertial Measurement Unit, WIMU); their goal was either to detect falls and promptly react in case of fall events, or to quantify fall risk instrumentally. The WIMU fall detector is intended to be worn at the waist level for use during activities of daily living; the WIMU logger is intended for the quantitative assessment of tested individuals during the execution of clinical tests. Both devices provide their service in conjunction with an Android mobile device. The ICT service was developed and tested within the European project I-DONT-FALL (Integrated prevention and Detection sOlutioNs Tailored to the population and risk factors associated with FALLs, funded by EU, action EU CIP-ICT-PSP-2011-5: GA #CIP-297225). Sensor description and preliminary testing results are provided in this paper.

This study investigated the relationship between the intake of antioxidant nutrients and the suffering of cataracts in 177 institutionalized elderly people (61 men and 116 women) aged ≥ 65 years. Dietary intake was monitored for 7 consecutive days using a "precise individual weighing" method. Subjects, who during their earlier years were exposed by their work to sunlight, had a greater risk of suffering cataracts (OR = 3.2; Cl: 1.1–9.3, P < 0.05) than those who worked indoors. A relationship was found between increased vitamin C intake and a reduced prevalence of cataracts (i.e., when comparing those above P95 for vitamin C intake with those below P5; (OR = 0.08; Cl: 0.01–0.75, P 0.05). Among subjects with cataracts, 12.1% had vitamin C intakes of < 61 mg/day (P10) and only 2.2% had intakes of > 183 mg/day (P95) (p < 0.01). Subjects who consumed > 3290 μg/day (P95) of lutein were less likely to have cataracts (OR = 0.086; Cl: 0.007–1.084; p < 0.05) than those whose consumption was < 256 μg/day (P5). In men, high intakes of zeaxanthin seemed to provide a protective effect against the problem (OR = 0.96; Cl: 0.91–0.99; p < 0.05). The results suggest an association exists between exposure to sunlight and the development of cataracts, and that vitamin C, lutein, and zeaxanthin offer some protection against this disorder.

Ziel dieser Untersuchung war die Autonomie, Privatheit und die Umsetzung des Prinzips der «informierten Zustimmung» aus der Perspektive des institutionell zu betreuenden, älteren Menschen zu beschreiben. Die Untersuchung ist ein Teil des durch die EU-Kommission unterstützten BIOMED 2 Projektes «Patient’s autonomy and privacy in nursing interventions»1. Interviewdaten (n = 95) wurden in deutschen Kliniken der Geriatrie und Pflegeheimen gesammelt. Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die Teilnehmer in geringem Maß selbstbestimmte Entscheidungen treffen konnten. Das Prinzip der «informierten Zustimmung» wurde wenig umgesetzt. Ihre Privatheit sahen die Teilnehmer in Mehrbettzimmern sowie in Situationen des Ankleidens und bei der Verrichtung der Ausscheidungen nicht respektiert. Es ist anzunehmen, dass ältere Menschen wegen Informationsdefiziten, durch ihren Hilfsbedarf und durch die festgelegten Organisationsstrukturen der Pflegeeinrichtungen eine passive Krankenrolle übernehmen. Es wäre denkbar, dass die Autonomie der älteren Menschen gefördert werden könnte, wenn die Pflegekräfte sie in der Rolle des Fürsprechers bei selbstbestimmten Entscheidungen unterstützen würden. Bei den pflegerischen Interventionen würde die Umsetzung des Prinzips der «informierten Zustimmung» sowohl die Autonomie als auch die Respektierung der Privatheit fördern. Es ist außerdem anzunehmen, dass durch Flexibilisierung der Organisationsstrukturen der Pflegeeinrichtungen die Autonomie und Lebensqualität der älteren Menschen gefördert werden könnte.
