This paper presents an implementation of Eurocode load cases for discrete global optimization algorithm for planar structures based on the principles of finite element methods and genetic algorithms. The final optimal design is obtained using IPE sections chosen as feasible by the algorithm, from the available steel sections from industry. The algorithm is tested on an asymmetric planar steel frame with promising results.

Abstract Results from an experimental and analytical study on the behavior of braided glass fiber composite tubes under quasi-static crush conditions are presented. The composite tubes have an initiator plug introduced at one open end (chamfered) while the other end is clamped. This procedure causes the tube to ‘flare’ outwards into fronds and results in the progressive failure of the tube in the axial and hoop direction without global tube buckling. Axial force and axial displacements are measured during these tests in order to assess energy absorption. In addition, readings from strain gages that are placed at critical locations on the tube walls are used to assess the state of strain on the tube walls away from the crush end. During a crush test, the axial load ascended to a maximum value and subsequently settled to a plateau value about which the load oscillated during the progressive crushing of the tube. The oscillations exhibited distinct periodicity. Results from an analytical model that best simulates the failure of these tubes are presented. The model is based on an axisymmetric formulation of the cylindrical shell equations in conjunction with ideas from classical fracture mechanics and continuum damage mechanics.

The analysis for optimal design of an air-cooled internal combustion engine cooling fin array by using genetic algorithms (GA) is presented in this study. Genetic Algorithms are robust, stochastic search techniques which are also used for optimizing highly complex problems. In this study, the fin array is of the traditional circular fin type, which is subject to ambient convective heat transfer. The parameters (degrees of freedom) selected for the analysis include the cylinder wall thickness-to-radius ratio, fin thickness, fin length, the number of fins, and the local heat transfer coefficient. By using a single objective GA procedure, the heat transfer through the fin arrays is set as the objective function to be optimized with each parameter varied within the physical ranges. Proper population size is selected and the mutations, cross-over and selection are conducted in the GA procedure to arrive at the optimal set of parameters after a certain number of generations. The GA proves to be an effective optimization method in the thermal system component designs when the number of independent variables is large.

The effect of specific absorbed energy on pultruded profile and thin-walled aluminum composite square cross-section tubes were studied via experimentally. The type of strand mat E-glass reinforced polyester resin was conducted in this study. The specimens of square pultruded and thin-walled wrapped strand mat E-glass composite were compressed under quasi-static of obliquely loadings from the top moving plat platen. For each specimen of composite tubes, triggering mechanism was applied on frontal end top of the tube to obtain the progressive failure throughout the crash event. The pultruded profile tube wall-thicknesses of 2.1 mm and thin-walled aluminum 1.9 mm thickness wrapped 3 layer woven fabric were examined, and the effects of crushing behaviors and failure modes were discussed. Results showed that the tubes energy absorption capability was affected significantly by different type of composite made in term of internal energy.
