Subway plays an important role in urban transport system. Fire as the major risk of the subway, is gaining increasing concern. In this study, fire simulation is performed to estimate fire safety of different compartments of the subway train. Result shows that the two compartments in the middle become dangerous at 150s and the compartments in the two ends are not safe at 300s approximately. The other two compartments are always safe during the simulation time.

In this paper, a transient numerical simulation method is used to investigate the effects of the two furnace configurations on the thermal field: the shape of the melt–crystal (M/C) interface and the thermal stress in the growing multicrystalline ingot. First, four different power ratios (top power to side power) are investigated, and then three positions (i.e., the vertical, angled, and horizontal positions) of the insulation block are compared with the conventional setup. The power ratio simulation results show that with a descending power ratio, the M/C interface becomes flatter and the thermal stress in the solidified ingot is lower. In our cases, a power ratio of 1:3–1:4 is more feasible for high-quality ingot. The block’s position simulation results indicate that the horizontal block can more effectively reduce the radial temperature gradient, resulting in a flatter M/C interface and lower thermal stress.

In this paper, we study the spectral properties of a finite system of flexural elements connected by gyroscopic spinners. We determine how the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of the system depend on the gyricity of the spinners. In addition, we present a transient numerical simulation that shows how a gyroscopic spinner attached to the end of a hinged beam can be used as a ‘stabilizer’, reducing the displacements of the beam. We also discuss the dispersive properties of an infinite periodic system of beams with gyroscopic spinners at the junctions. In particular, we investigate how the band-gaps of the structure can be tuned by varying the gyricity of the spinners. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Modelling of dynamic phenomena and localization in structured media (part 1)’.

Three dimensional transient numerical simulation on cylinder flow field of 4B26 diesel was done by AVL FIRE. Detailed flow field structure of diesel cylinder was calculated. The typical swirl flow and squish flow were established in 4B26 diesel engine chamber. swirl flow and squish flow can increase the fuel and air mixing rate, and can improve diesel combustion and can reduce emissions of pollutants. Oil beam could accelerate the air around it.
