This paper delivers a detailed analysis of the key legislative and judicial developments regarding women’s rights in Spain from the Second Republic to the present. The socioeconomic and human benefits and consequences of said legislation are examined. Furthermore, a comparative analysis, from both cultural and legislative perspectives, is presented to add global context to the pertinent legislative and judicial changes.

Empezando desde una perspectiva histórica sobre el activismo de las mujeres en Túnez, este artículo analiza la agencia de las asociaciones femeninas durante y después de los levantamientos de 2011. Esta contribuyó a que Túnez fuera considerada la única transición democrática “prometedora” entre las llamadas Primaveras Árabes. A través de un análisis de documentos y entrevistas, se investiga el apoyo de la UE a estas asociaciones, con un doble objetivo. Primero, deconstruir la narrativa estereotipada occidental (Mohanty, 1999) acerca de las mujeres tunecinas. En segundo lugar, investigar cómo esta narrativa influencia el apoyo de la UE a las asociaciones de mujeres en Túnez, y en consecuencia, a su transición democrática en general. Por lo tanto, el objetivo es cuestionar el enfoque europeo de la vecindad sur y la “metanarrativa” (Cebeci, 2012) que se ha construido sobre ello a lo largo de los años.

<p><strong>Resumen</strong></p><p>Los feminismos islámicos nacieron en los años noventa del siglo XX y desde entonces han sido objeto de severas críticas por parte de quienes consideran que no es posible luchar por los derechos de las mujeres desde las propias creencias. Frente a sus opositores, académicas y activistas abogan por la hermenéutica coránica como herramienta para desvelar las potencialidades que el texto sagrado ofrece para la igualdad. Su discurso es, además, un ataque directo a las concepciones más tradicionales del feminismo occidental y sus representaciones a menudo estereotipadas de las musulmanas.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Islamic feminisms were born in the 90’s and since then they have been subject to criticism by those who believe that it is not possible to fight for women's rights in the framework of a religion. However, the scholars and activists of the Islamic feminisms advocate for the Koranic hermeneutics as a tool to unveil the potential that the sacred text offers for equality. This article intends to be a brief introduction to a sometimes neglected issue of the recent Spanish history: the extraordinary progress the short-lived Second Republic (1931-1936) meant for women. The significant and somewhat revolutionary achievements at a social, legal, and political level were shadowed by the Civil War and the long forty years of the subsequent dictatorship. However, studying and recovering the history of women during the Republican period enables us to better understand to what extent Franco’s regime was a dramatic step backwards also in terms of women’s rights.
