Behçet’s disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent exacerbations. Limited studies have shown it has a negative impact on patients quality of life(QoL). This study aimed to evaluate Quality of Life in Patients with Behçet’s disease compared with healthy controls. A case-control study involved 71 patients with BD compared with 71 healthy controls matched in age and sex. Health-related quality-of-life was evaluated using the Short Form-36 (SF-36). All the components of Short Form-36 (SF-36), it's summary scores, and Total Short Form-36 (Total SF-36) score was significantly lower (p-value <0.001 ) in patients compared to controls. Each organ involvement studied may affect independently specific SF-36 subscores. Central nervous system involvement in BD  had a strong impact since it affects most of the SF-36 subscores. In conclusion: Health-related Quality of life was significantly impaired in Iraqi patients with Behçet’s disease compared to healthy controls. Each organ involvement studied may affect independently specific SF-36 subscores.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that the quality of life and diet quality in individuals with rheumatological diseases are poor and may adversely affect the course of the disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the quality of life and diet of individuals with Behçet’s Disease (BD) compared to healthy controls. METHODS: This study was planned as a case-control study, and 60 adult patients with BD were compared with age (±1) and sex paired match healthy controls concerning the quality of life and diet. Diet quality was assessed using nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and the mean adequacy ratio (MAR) values calculated from 24 h dietary food recall and obesity was also evaluated by various anthropometric measurements. The Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36) was used to evaluate the quality of life (QoL). In addition, the 24-hour physical activities were recorded to calculate physical activity levels (PAL). Data were analyzed by SPSS 25.0 via paired sample t-test and McNemar (and McNemar-Bowkers) test. p <  0.05 was deemed significant. RESULTS: The findings showed that cases were more obese (p = 0.005), less physically active (p <  0.001), had lower QoL (p <  0.01 for all subscales) and had higher Beck depression scores (p = 0.001). Controls had higher means of energy (p <  0.001), CHO% (p = 0.025), fat% (p = 0.004), and fiber (p = 0.007) intake and mean MAR value (p <  0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to healthy controls, patients with BD were more obese, had lower QoL and lower diet quality. Therefore, people with BD should be evaluated for comorbid diseases and be supported by health professionals, such as dietitians and psychologists.

Background:Behçet’s Disease (BD) is a chronic, inflammatory, rheumatic disease that is characterized by mucocutaneous lesions and can be seen major organ involvement such as eyes, musculoskeletal system, gastrointestinal system and central nervous system. Impaired quality of life, aerobic capacity, respiratory function and life satisfaction, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety and fatigue are seen commonly in BD patients like the other rheumatic diseases. Considering that regular physical activity effects survival for patients and healthy people, it is important to determine the factors affecting physical activity level and exercise barriers. Objectives:The aim of this study is to investigate physical activity level and exercise barriers in patients with BD.Methods:45 patients were included in the study. Physical activity level, exercise barriers, fatigue, depression, pain, quality of life and aerobic capacity were evaluated with International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Exercise Barriers and Benefits Scale (EBBS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Behçet’s Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (BDQoL) and 6 minutes walk test, respectively. Spaerman’s Correlation Coefficient were used to investigate the relationships between exercise barriers and other parameters. Results:IPAQ demonstrated that 22 (48.8%) of the patients had low level physical activitiy. Additionally, physical activity levels significantly correlated with both exercise barriers (rho= -0.345) and exercise benefits (rho= 0.320) (p<0.05). BDQoL scores also correlated significantly with exercise barrier scores (rho= 0.338), (p<0.05). No significant relationships were observed for other parameters. Conclusion:Exercise and physical activity are of great importance because of its positive contribution to the musculoskeletal system for BD patients’ rehabilitation. Thinking of negative effects of physical inactivity, patients with Behçet disease should be encouraged to exercise. Also, reasons of physical inactivity should be investigated and treated.References:[1]Ilhan B, Can M, Alibaz-Oner F, Yilmaz-Oner S, Polat-Korkmaz O, Ozen G et al.
