La formación de nuevas variedades de cereales menores requiere de semilla genética nueva o mejorada, por lo que se trazaron los objetivos de introducir y adaptar líneas de trigo harinero, trigo duro y triticale y seleccionar los mejores genotipos a la E.E.A. “El Mantaro”. Se introdujeron del CIMMYT – MEXICO líneas de trigo harinero 2 planteles: 27º ESWYT, 14º SAWYT, trigo duro 1plantel: 38º IDYN, y triticale 1plantel: 38º ITYN, cada plantel consta de 50 líneas. Se instalaron las líneas en parcelas de observación en el lote 6B de la E.E.A. “El Mantaro”, campaña 2007 – 2008, se seleccionaron las cinco mejores líneas de cada plantel en base al rendimiento (k/ha) en grano. El plantel de trigo harinero 27º ESWYT muestra un rendimiento máximo de 4167 kg/ha. El plantel de trigo harinero 14º SAWYT de 6458 kg/ha, el plantel de triticale 38º IDYN de 6042 kg/ha, el plantel de triticale 38º ITYN de 4167 kg/ ha. La mejor respuesta a roya amarilla (Puccinia striiformis West) lo muestran los planteles 14º SAWYT (trigo harinero), y 38º IDYN (trigo duro). Las líneas seleccionadas de cada plantel serán multiplicadas y empleadas en fitomejoramiento.

Stripe rust of wheat, Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, was found to oversummer in the Sierra Nevada at altitudes of 6000 ft or above on wild grasses belonging to Elymus spp., Hordeum spp., and Sitanion spp. The similarity of infection types of stripe rust isolates from various locations and hosts on a differential set of wheat cultivars suggests that only one race of P. striiformis f. sp. tritici occurs in California.Stripe rust on Poa spp. should be considered as P. striiformis f. sp. poae f. sp. nov. because of its entirely different host range and temperature requirements.A mean temperature of 22.3 °C or mean maximum temperature of 32.4 °C measured over a 10-day period is lethal to P. striiformis f. sp. tritici, thus accounting for the absence of this fungus during the summer in all regions of California but the Sierra Nevada and the coastal area. In late autumn, recurrence of the rust in the wheat-growing areas is initiated when east winds carry uredospores from the Sierra Nevada into the central part of the Sacramento – San Joaquin Valley, infecting volunteer wheat plants and early sown wheat. In late winter, a shortening of the latent period because of rising daily temperatures results in a rapid development of stripe rust at these infection sites and consequently in secondary spread of the rust to previously uninfected areas.

The 7-oxosterols 1-2 and the 7-hydroxysterols 3-6 induce resistance toward the fungal pathogens Puccinia striiformis West, and Puccinia hordei Otth in barley and wheat. Primary leaves of the plants were sprayed with solutions of the compounds ( 10-4 mol/l in 1% aqu. ethanol) followed, 2 days later, by challenge inoculation with the fungal pathogens. The results indicate that 7α- and 7β-hydroxylated epimers of β-sitosterol and cholesterol show the highest value of induced resistance (39-49% reduction of infection sites). No enhanced resistance toward the fungi Erysiphe graminis DC f.sp. tricitic and hordei and Cochliobolus sativus Ito & Kuribayashi was observed.
