A field experiment was conducted at Tapioca and Castor Research Station, Yethapur, Salem district, Tamil Nadu during the year 2012 – 2014. The following treatments were imposed and replicated thrice in split plot design. In main plot, different hybrids viz., YRCH 1(M1 ), GCH 4 (M2 ), DCH 519 (M3 ) and DCH 177 (M4 ) and in sub plot, different spacing viz., 90 x 90 cm (S1 ), 120 x 90 cm (S2 ) and 120 x 120 cm (S3 ) were evaluated during rabi season under irrigated condition. The results revealed that, castor crop grown well during Rabi season under irrigated condition. It is mainly due to the reason that, in Rabi sown crop there is no incidence of Botrytis gray mold disease and also cool dry season promotes seed setting in castor which results higher seed yield was obtained. Hybrids performed better in wider spacing because, they produce more number of spikes and effective spike length in castor. This is mainly due to in wider spacing, there is lesser competition between the plants. In the nutshell, hybrid YRCH 1 with a spacing of 120 x 120 cm recorded 19 per cent higher seed yield (2572 kg ha-1) than closer spacing of 90 x 90 cm (2157 kg ha-1) under irrigated condition

Field experiments were conducted at Pulses and Oilseeds Research Station, Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal during pre kharif, kharif and rabi seasons of 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 to study the effect of water soluble fertilizer spray on growth and yield of greengram, blackgram, lathyrus, lentil and chickpea. Pulses are mostly grown by the farmers without any fertilizer application, as positive effect of supplying legume plants with supplementary nitrogen was found to have beneficial effect on enhancing growth and increasing seed yield. Five sets of experiments were laid out in a split plot design with three replications viz. two levels of basal fertilizer application (F0 -No basal dose of fertilizer, F1 -Basal dose of fertilizer application @ 20, 40, 40 kg N, P2O5, K2O ha−1.) as factor A in main plot and seven levels of foliar spray of water soluble fertilizers at pre flowering stage (no spray, 0.5% NPK(19-19-19), 1% NPK(19-19-19), 2% NPK(19-19-19), 3% NPK(19-19-19), 2% DAP, 2% Urea) as factor B in sub plot. Significantly higher seed yield of pulses were recorded with application of 2% urea spray over basal dose of fertilizer application The lowest seed yield was recorded with no basal fertilizer and spray. Without basal dose of fertilizer application, 3% NPK (19-19-19) spray recorded highest seed yield. Under basal dose of fertilizer application, the results showed a gradual increase in yield with the increase in concentration of NPK (19-19-19) fertilizer spray up to 2%, Among the fertilizer spray treatments irrespective of basal dose of fertilizer application, urea spray was significantly better than all other treatments.

The growth and yield characters of chickpea varieties suitable for mechanical harvesting were evaluated through field experiment conducted for three consecutive years (2016__17 to 2018__19) during rabi season on vertisols under rainfed conditions at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh. The investigation was carried out in split plot design with three replications. Two plant geometries (30.0 × 10.0 cm and 22.5 × 10.0 cm) were assigned to main plots and six chickpea varieties (viz., GBM 2, Dheera, CSJ 515, HC 5, Phule G 08108 and BRC 1) were assigned to sub plots. Pooled analysis of experimental results indicated that significantly higher number of branches per plant (8.7) and number of pods per plant (31.1) and test weight (24.3 g) were observed under 30.0 × 10.0 cm when compared to 22.5 × 10.0 cm. Higher plant height (44.8 cm), height of lowest pod bearing branch (30.0 cm), lower days to 50 % flowering (42.1 days) and higher test weight (31.2 g) were observed in Dheera. Higher number of branches per plant (9.2) and number of pods per plant (34.2) were observed in GBM 2. Higher seed yield was observed in Phule G 08108 (1708 kg ha-1) which is followed by GBM 2 (1675 kg ha-1) Dheera (1569 kg ha-1) and BRC 1 (1493 kg ha-1). Higher harvest index (56.4%) was also observed in Phule G 08108. Chickpea varieties GBM2, Dheera and BRC1 were best suitable for mechanical harvesting and higher seed yield due to their excellent morphology.

A field experiment was conducted at Main Agricultural Research Station, Dharwad during rainy season of 2015 and 2016 to study the effect of planting pattern and phosphorus management on production and profitability of intercropping system of mungbean and pigeonpea. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications and eight treatments. Among them, four planting patterns [sole pigeonpea, mungbean + pigeonpea 1:3 (120 cm x 20 cm), mungbean + pigeonpea 1:2 (90 cm x 20 cm) and mungbean + pigeonpea 2:2 (90 cm x 20 cm)] were main plot treatments and two phosphorus levels (P2O5 @ 50 kg ha-1 and P2O5 @ 75 kg ha-1) were sub plot treatments. Based on pooled data the results revealed that, the significantly higher mungbean seed yield (424 kg ha-1) was recorded with application of 75 kg P2O5 as compared to 50 kg P2O5 ha-1. Whereas, in planting pattern, sole mungbean recorded significantly higher seed yield (757 kg ha-1) as compared to all other intercropping systems. Yield advantage indices and net returns were significantly higher in pigeonpea + mungbean (1:3) with 75 kg P2O5 ha-1 as compared to other treatments. This study indicated the need of fifty per cent higher dose of P2O5 for the pigeonpea and mungbean intercropping system (1:3) in northern transition zone of Karnataka.

A study on comparative productive efficiency and feasibility of lentil varieties both at relay and minimum tillage were conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during the Rabi season of 2007-08 and 2008-09. Three lentil varieties viz. BARI Masur-2, BARI Masur-3 and BARI Masur-4 and two sowing methods viz. relay sowing and furrow sowing (Minimum tillage) were compared. The highest seed yield (1.59 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Masur-4 because of highest number of pods/plant and plant population/m2 while lowest from BARI Masur-2 (1.39 t/ha). The sowing methods had significant effect on the seed yield of lentil. Crops sown in furrows produced higher seed yield (1.60 t/ha) than that of crops in relay sowing. The interaction effect between varieties and sowing methods also had significant effect on the seed yield and yield attributes. The lentil variety BARI Masur-4 when grown in furrows gave the highest seed yield (1.70 t/ha). Though seed yield and gross return were highest in furrow sowing but highest benefit cost ratio (4.67) was found in relay sowing method.Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 40(2): 271-278 June 2015
