The respiratory tract humidification transforms inspired air from whatever temperature and humidity it is, to alveolar air at 37°C at 100 % RH (relative humidity). This is a key thermodynamic and heat and mass transfer process and is as critical as the actual respiration. The normal body temperature of humans is also around 37°C. A simple mathematical analysis is done by replacing figures of moisture content for 100% saturation level at 37°C in the alveolar partial pressure table, by those at 39°C and 30°C and then recalculating partial pressure figures of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The result is startling and deciphers the significance of 37°C. As of today, there is probably no place on the earth where one can have ambient air at 37°C concurrently with 100% RH. Such is the uniqueness of alveolar air parameters. Apparently this uniqueness is threatened by climate change. We are ourselves infringing on this ‘Natural Selection’. At certain places we have pushed ourselves, closer to 37°C at 100% RH, as an outcome of massive urbanization and industrialization. As a result the key critical process of humidification and conditioning of inspired air, essentially at the upper respiratory tract URT, has gone redundant. A process becomes redundant, when its primary purpose is achieved beforehand. The redundancy has weakened respiratory immune defense systems as well and allowed all viruses like Sars-Cov-2, an unchallenged access to reach alveoli and enter through ACE2 receptors. Free access meteorological data of places like Wuhan indicates that the average humidity at these places were higher than 75% and concurrently temperatures were above 30°C during later part of 2019.Wuhan acted as starting point to the pandemic, where some people had a weak or disabled immune defense due to the redundancy in upper respiratory tract (URT). Once the infections crossed a threshold, it escalated into a pandemic. At ‘Climate Change’ meets, increase in ambient temperature concurrently with rising humidity due to massive urbanization and industrialization, and increased use of water for various industrial processes, needs to be on top of the agenda. Enthalpy, a thermodynamic property of atmospheric air, becomes a good indicator of the concurrent effect of high temperature and high humidity. Enthalpy of air crossing 70 KJ/Kg level may be set as warning sign for impending viral attack.Key Words: Relative Humidity, Alveolar Air, Natural Selection, Redundancy, Wuhan, Climate Change, Enthalpy

Introduction: Due to dynamic industrialisation smog became a frequent phenomenon in most developing cities. According to the last WHO report from Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution Database, Krakow has been classified in the 11th place among the most polluted cities in Europe. It seems to be an urgent issue because of the influence of air pollution on the condition of upper respiratory tract. Materials & Methods: In December 2015 there were 141 patients aged 17-91 years with upper respiratory tract diseases admitted to the phoniatric outpatient clinic in the University Hospital in Cracow. They suffered from cough, hoarseness and periodic aphonia. On the basis of the results of videolaryngostroboscopy 60 patients with exacerbation of the chronic laryngitis were selected into two numerically equal groups: from Cracow and from other places at least 60 km away. The groups were equal to each other also in three categories: sex, age and voice usage. The patients were referred to the Pedagogical University in Cracow for laryngography to evaluate the movement of the vocal folds and to trace a voice profile. Finally, there were two possible types of treatment – conventional pharmacotherapy or subterraneotherapy in the underground Health Resort in the "Wieliczka" Salt Mine. Results: Pearson correlation coefficient between the distance from the place of residence to Cracow and the scale of exacerbation of inflammation of upper respiratory tract presenting as vocal fold dysfunction was observed (r= 0,617; p<0,05). Conclusion: The place of residence (in or out of the industrial area) and exacerbations of chronic laryngitis are highly correlated. Air pollution seems to be the main factor influencing on the condition of upper respiratory tract. In our local conditions of Lesser Poland Voivodeship subterraneotherapy may be an interesting, non-invasive method preventing from exacerbations of upper respiratory tract diseases.

Abstract: Upper Respiratory Track Infections (URI) is a kind of respiratory disease which is closely related to the quality of housing and the quality of ambient air. Ventilation is one component of a residential environmental health assessment. The dust may cause dryness of mucous in the respiratory tract so that a person may suffer or feel the symptoms of respiratory infection. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between ambient air dust and ventilation in the former place of fi nal processing (TPA) Keputih with URI (Upper Respiratory Tract Infection). This research is a cross sectional analytical and observational. The sample in this study is the ambient air concentration of dust particles and housewives from 77 families in RW VIII Keputih Area. To determine the relationship of ambient air dust and ventilation with respiratorydisease using Chi Square test. The results showed that respondents who had experienced respiratory infection as much as 89,6%. Levels of dust particles measured at the point I exceeded the quality standard that is equal to 0,3223 mg/Nm3. Home ventilation that do not appropiate the requirements of a healthy home is at 93.5%.There’s a relationship between the use of home ventilation with URI (p = 0.000) and the levels of ambient air dust particles with URI (p = 0.003). This study concludes that the two variables associated with the incidence of respiratory infection so the need for community empowerment and proactive attitude of the various instruments of government in the area of research on the prevention of URI and the presence of a good control of the quality of environmental health VIII RW Keputih Area. Keywords: dust quality, home ventilation, the ex-place of fi nal processing, URI
