Multi-person tracking plays a critical role in the analysis of surveillance video. However, most existing work focus on shorterterm (e.g. minute-long or hour-long) video sequences. Therefore, we propose a multi-person tracking algorithm for very long-term (e.g. month-long) multi-camera surveillance scenarios. Long-term tracking is challenging because 1) the apparel/appearance of the same person will vary greatly over multiple days and 2) a person will leave and re-enter the scene numerous times. To tackle these challenges, we leverage face recognition information, which is robust to apparel change, to automatically reinitialize our tracker over multiple days of recordings. Unfortunately, recognized faces are unavailable oftentimes. Therefore, our tracker propagates identity information to frames without recognized faces by uncovering the appearance and spatial manifold formed by person detections. We tested our algorithm on a 23-day 15-camera data set (4,935 hours total), and we were able to localize a person 53.2% of the time with 69.8% precision. Wefurther performed video summarization experiments based on our tracking output. Results on 116.25 hours of video showed that wewere able to generate a reasonable visual diary (i.e. a summary of what a person did) for different people, thus potentially opening thedoor to automatic summarization of the vast amount of surveillance video generated every day

An effective climate change action involves the critical role that companies must play in assuring the long-term human and social well-being of future generations. In our study, we offer a more holistic, inclusive, both–and approach to the challenge of environmental innovation (EI) that uses a novel methodology to identify relevant configurations for firms engaging in a superior EI strategy. A conceptual framework is proposed that identifies six sets of driving characteristics of EI and two sets of beneficial outcomes, all inherently tensional. Our analysis utilizes a complementary rather than an oppositional point of view. A data set of 65 companies in the ICT value chain is analyzed via fuzzy-set comparative analysis (fsQCA) and a post-QCA procedure. The results reveal that achieving a superior EI strategy is possible in several scenarios. Specifically, after close examination, two main configuration groups emerge, referred to as technological environmental innovators and organizational environmental innovators.

AbstractThe hippocampus plays a critical role in storing and retrieving spatial information. By targeting the dorsal hippocampus and manipulating specific “candidate” molecules using pharmacological and genetic manipulations, we have previously discovered that long-term active place avoidance memory requires transient activation of particular molecules in dorsal hippocampus. These molecules include amongst others, the persistent kinases Ca-calmodulin kinase II (CaMKII) and the atypical protein kinase C isoform PKC ι/λ for acquisition of the conditioned behavior, whereas persistent activation of the other atypical PKC, protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ) is necessary for maintaining the memory for at least a month. It nonetheless remains unclear what other molecules and their interactions maintain active place avoidance long-term memory, and the candidate molecule approach is both impractical and inadequate to identify new candidates since there are so many to survey. Here we use a complementary approach to identify candidates by transcriptional profiling of hippocampus subregions after formation of the long-term active place avoidance memory. Interestingly, 24-h after conditioning and soon after expressing memory retention, immediate early genes were upregulated in the dentate gyrus but not Ammon’s horn of the memory expressing group. In addition to determining what genes are differentially regulated during memory maintenance, we performed an integrative, unbiased survey of the genes with expression levels that covary with behavioral measures of active place avoidance memory persistence. Gene Ontology analysis of the most differentially expressed genes shows that active place avoidance memory is associated with activation of transcription and synaptic differentiation in dentate gyrus but not CA3 or CA1, whereas hypothesis-driven candidate molecule analyses identified insignificant changes in the expression of many LTP-associated molecules in the various hippocampal subfields, nor did they covary with active place avoidance memory expression, ruling out strong transcriptional regulation but not translational regulation, which was not investigated. These findings and the data set establish an unbiased resource to screen for molecules and evaluate hypotheses for the molecular components of a hippocampus-dependent, long-term active place avoidance memory.

AbstractWater deficit is one of the major limiting factors for apple (Malus domestica) production on the Loess Plateau, a major apple cultivation area in China. The identification of genes related to the regulation of water use efficiency (WUE) is a crucial aspect of crop breeding programs. As a conserved degradation and recycling mechanism in eukaryotes, autophagy has been reported to participate in various stress responses. However, the relationship between autophagy and WUE regulation has not been explored. We have shown that a crucial autophagy protein in apple, MdATG8i, plays a role in improving salt tolerance. Here, we explored its biological function in response to long-term moderate drought stress. The results showed that MdATG8i-overexpressing (MdATG8i-OE) apple plants exhibited higher WUE than wild-type (WT) plants under long-term moderate drought conditions. Plant WUE can be increased by improving photosynthetic efficiency. Osmoregulation plays a critical role in plant stress resistance and adaptation. Under long-term drought conditions, the photosynthetic capacity and accumulation of sugar and amino acids were higher in MdATG8i-OE plants than in WT plants. The increased photosynthetic capacity in the OE plants could be attributed to their ability to maintain optimal stomatal aperture, organized chloroplasts, and strong antioxidant activity. MdATG8i overexpression also promoted autophagic activity, which was likely related to the changes described above. In summary, our results demonstrate that MdATG8i-OE apple lines exhibited higher WUE than WT under long-term moderate drought conditions because they maintained robust photosynthesis, effective osmotic adjustment processes, and strong autophagic activity.

This paper studies how receiving a bonus changes the consumers’ demand for auto loans and the risk of future delinquency. Unlike traditional consumer products, auto loans have a long-term impact on consumers’ financial state because of the monthly payment obligation. Using a large consumer panel data set of credit and employment information, the authors find that receiving a bonus increases auto loan demand by 21 percent. These loans, however, are associated with higher risk, as the delinquency rate increases by 18.5 −31.4 percent depending on different measures. In contrast, an increase in consumers’ base salary will increase the demand for auto loans but not the delinquency. By comparing consumers with bonuses with those without bonuses, the authors find that bonus payments lead to both demand expansion and demand shifting on auto loans. The empirical findings help shed light on how consumers make financial decisions and have important implications for financial institutions on when demand for auto loans and the associated risk arise.
