<p>Lake sediments bear valuable information allowing multidisciplinary research to address paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions at regional to global scales. Sedimentological, geochemical, paleontological and biological tools are commonly used to tackle these questions, which are generally driven by a set of intricated parameters. Among them, the importance of biogeochemical cycling is largely acknowledged in the lake (paleo-) water columns and has been at the heart of most paleolimnological studies. The way these signals are transferred to lake sediments has largely been studied. However, microbial communities - the principal actors in the biogeochemical cycling framework - keep being active in the sediment, and continue to influence the preservation and retention of organic and inorganic matter while buried. Gathered within the “early diagenesis” black box, these processes, once qualified, can help better interpret the proxies they may influence, and even constitute new ones. Within this work, we provide examples showing that the integration of studies of the subsurface biosphere within geo- and paleo-limnology investigations can help unlock or secure the potential of multiproxy analysis for reconstructing the paleoenvironments, paleoclimates and paleo-ecology of lake basins. The use of now well-developed OMICS methods, through the analysis of environmental and/or ancient DNA and lipids in particular has been coupled to mineralogical, isotopic and magnetic information in the Dead Sea (Levant) to demonstrate the differential preservation of mineralogic and sedimentologic signals along the last two glacial-interglacial cycles (Thomas et al., 2015, 2016; Ebert et al., 2018). Similar signals have been unlocked in Lake Towuti (Indonesia) and in Laguna Potrok Aike (Argentina) (Vuillemin et al., 2015, 2017). In Lake Ohrid (North Macedonia/Albania), environmental DNA has provided limited inputs on that perspective (Thomas et al., 2020), but has shown that ancient/fossil DNA could provide valuable information regarding the lake primary productivity and the status of its watershed land-cover. Integrating OMICS methods to tackle the identity and activity of the ancient and modern subsurface biosphere of lakes therefore holds an immense potential not only for microbiology investigations, but also for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental reconstructions.</p><p>Ebert et al. The paper presents the analysis of the data received from the survey of heads of industrial enterprises and also experts-researchers in 2003-2004. The data describe the economic state of enterprises and their position in competitive, administrative, intermediary, financial etc. environment. The assumption of essential heterogeneity of the set of industrial enterprises, including enterprises of the same sector or the same territorial formation is confirmed. It is shown that Russian industrial enterprises as a rule do not feel influence of the stock market situation while the condition of the currency market influences the majority of enterprises. The sensitivity of enterprises depends on their economic situation: the better is the state, the stronger is the influence. Weak influence of the investment and administrative environment on the state of enterprises and negative influence of the activity of intermediary organizations are registered. More than 2/3 of the respondents consider important strengthening of the responsibility of large proprietors for inefficient activity of their enterprises. Lack of the strategic approach in the activity of authorities of all levels is ascertained and the necessity of development and realization of industrial policy at all administrative levels, including the municipal one, is shown.

Research suggests political identity has strong influence over individuals’ attitudes and beliefs, which in turn can affect their behavior. Likewise, firsthand experience with an issue can also affect attitudes and beliefs. A large (N = 10,362) survey (Pew Research and Ipsos W64) of Americans was analyzed to investigate the effects of both political identity and personal impact on individuals’ reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results show that political identity (i.e., Democrat or Republican) and personal impact (i.e., personally affected or not) influenced different aspects of the American public’s reaction to COVID-19. Political identity exerted a strong influence on self-reports of emotional distress, threat perception, discomfort with exposure, support for restrictions, and perception of under/overreaction by individuals and institutions. Personal impact exerted a comparatively weaker influence on reported emotional distress and threat perception. Both factors had a weak influence on appraisal of individual and organizational and community responses. The dominating influence of political identity carried over into the bivariate relations among these responses. In particular, the appraisal of organizational response divided along party lines, tied to opposing views of whether there has been over- or under-reaction to the pandemic. The dominance of political identity has important implications for crisis management and reflects the influence of normative value differences between the parties, partisan messaging on the pandemic, and polarization in American politics.

Abstract. Ancient Lake Ohrid on the Balkan Peninsula is considered to be the oldest ancient lake in Europe with a suggested Plio-/Pleistocene age. Its exact geological age, however, remains unknown. Therefore, molecular clock data of Lake Ohrid biota may serve as an independent constraint of available geological data, and may thus help to refine age estimates. Such evolutionary data may also help unravel potential biotic and abiotic factors that promote speciation events. Here, mitochondrial sequencing data of one of the largest groups of endemic taxa in the Ohrid watershed, the leech genus Dina, is used to test whether it represents an ancient lake species flock, to study the role of potential horizontal and vertical barriers in the watershed for evolutionary events, to estimate the onset of diversification in this group based on molecular clock analyses, and to compare this data with data from other endemic species for providing an approximate time frame for the origin of Lake Ohrid. Based on the criteria speciosity, monophyly and endemicity, it can be concluded that Dina spp. from the Ohrid watershed, indeed, represents an ancient lake species flock. Lineage sorting of its species, however, does not seem to be complete and/or hybridization may occur. Analyses of population structures of Dina spp. in the Ohrid watershed indicate a horizontal zonation of haplotypes from spring and lake populations, corroborating the role of lake-side springs, particularly the southern feeder springs, for evolutionary processes in endemic Ohrid taxa. Vertical differentiation of lake taxa, however, appears to be limited, though differences between populations from the littoral and the profundal are apparent. Molecular clock analyses indicate that the most recent common ancestor of extant species of this flock is approximately 1.99 ± 0.83 million years (Ma) old, whereas the split of the Ohrid Dina flock from a potential sister taxon outside the lake is estimated at 8.30 ± 3.60 Ma. Comparisons with other groups of endemic Ohrid species indicated that in all cases, diversification within the watershed started ≤2 Ma ago. Thus, this estimate may provide information on a minimum age for the origin of Lake Ohrid. Maximum ages are less consistent and generally less reliable. But cautiously, a maximum age of 3 Ma is suggested. Interestingly, this time frame of approximately 2–3 Ma ago for the origin of Lake Ohrid, generated based on genetic data, well fits the time frame most often used in the literature by geologists.
