Although it is generally acknowledged that the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) captures intelligence and numerical ability, many agree that it cannot be completely reduced to these constructs. Rather, it is presumed that the CRT also assesses some kind of thinking disposition towards reflective and open-minded thinking. In this manuscript, we report the results of a study that tested this assumption by exploring convergent validity of both the numerical and verbal version of the CRT. Using structural equation modelling, we investigated whether intelligence and numerical ability can account for all the variance in the CRT and if not, what is the nature of the unaccounted variance. Our conclusions about the convergent validity differed for the two types of test. For the numerical CRT, we found that the correlation between the latent numerical CRT and numerical ability was so high that the constructs were practically indistinguishable. As for the verbal CRT, the correlations between the latent verbal CRT and intelligence and numerical ability constructs were substantially lower, meaning that these two constructs do not account for all the variance in the test. However, the latent verbal CRT failed to correlate with belief bias and actively open-minded thinking, two closely related constructs, once the variance of intelligence and numerical ability was partialled out. We concluded that, despite its name, the CRT does not seem to assess the construct of cognitive reflection and its correlation with other variables found in the literature might mostly be driven by its overlap with intelligence and numerical ability.

The present study was conducted to investigate the existence of any possible relationship between the cognitive reflection test (CRT), numeracy and academic majors. The statistical population of this study consisted of 117 freshmen studying under the faculties selected from the University of Tabriz. The generalised structural equation modelling technique was employed for data analysis. The research results indicated that CRT and numeracy had positive and significant effects on high school and university program selection. According to the research model and the higher CRT scores of engineering and medicine (two popular majors) than that of other majors, it appears that individuals with higher CRT and numeracy scores are more inclined to get accepted into these programs. Moreover, the relationship between CRT and numeracy was positive and significant, where CRT acted as the cause and numeracy as the effect. However, the reverse need not necessarily be true. Keywords: Cognitive reflection, numeracy skill, academic majors, relationship.

Objective - The main objective of this empirical study was to validate a substantiated Principals' Developmental Leadership Behaviors Model (PDLBM) and an instrument to identify critical components of Principals' Developmental Leadership Behaviors (PDLB) in Malaysian secondary schoolcontext. Methodology/Technique - Structural Equation Modelling was employed to test the model. Exploratory Factor Analysis was applied to identify the underlying factors, whereas Confirmatory Factor Analysis was employed to test the measurement models. Findings - The analysis yielded a three-factor PDLBM: (1) focused, (2) supportive and (3) developer which supported evidence for convergent validity, construct reliability and discriminant validity. Novelty - The PDLBM is a coherent premier tested model derived in a local Malaysian cultural educational setting which provides direction for practitioners in planning and designing specific training programs for developing leadership competency among teacher leaders, with the enhancement of PDLB in Malaysian secondary schools. Type of Paper - Empirical Keywords : Principals' Developmental Leadership Behaviors; Structural Equation Modelling; Focused; Supportive; Developer; Teacher Leaders.

BackgroundThis article reports on the development and validation of a contextualised measure of personal resources for resilience in veterinary practice.MethodsExploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were used to evaluate data from two surveys of veterinary practitioners.ResultsExploratory factor analysis of the first survey (n=300) revealed six items comprising the Veterinary Resilience Scale–Personal Resources (VRS–PR). These items focused on flexibility, adaptability, optimism, building strengths, enjoying challenges, and maintaining motivation and enthusiasm at work. Structural equation modelling using the second survey (n=744) confirmed the factor structure of the VRS–PR and established convergent validity with an established measure of general resilience, the Brief Resilience Scale. Examination of the mean and standard deviation of the combined survey data enabled scores on the VRS–PR to be provisionally classified into ‘low’, ‘moderate’ and ‘high’ (reported by approximately 13%, 72% and 15% of respondents, respectively). Respondents also reported results spanning ‘low’, ‘moderate’ and ‘high’ classifications for the Brief Resilience Scale (approximately 34%, 57% and 9%, respectively).ConclusionThe VRS–PR may be used to evaluate the extent to which respondents draw upon the personal resources captured in the scale and identify areas for improvement.
